As we go through our lives our sense of 'self' completely changes. As a child our immediate family is everything and we rely on them for our basic physical and emotional needs and it is natural for a young child to be completely egocentric. This is just part of our biology and the way a young human is programmed to ensure survival. As a child grows, he or she begins to be able to see things from the point of view of other people and can become more empathic.
As we grow in to adults we begin to see how we fit in to the larger scheme of things. We begin to recognise that we are just a tiny, tiny part of a massive world. This recognition makes us feel humility.
I was very, very sick with viral meningitis 5 years ago and I hadn't realised how many things I took for granted in my life, until everything was almost taken away. Whilst it is not considered as serious as bacterial meningitis, it does still kill some people and leaves many with nasty after effects such as fibromyalgia and severe nerve damage. I am lucky I came through it relatively unscathed, though the recovery was long and difficult. I am so grateful now for every new day, every new experience and for every time I see my family and friends. The world is a different place for me now. I feel very lucky not only to have survived but also because I have so many wonderful people in my life, who choose to spend time with me. I can now see my place in this world clearly and it is really small but it is also filled with love.
My song this week is about humbly asking for help from a loved one. They will show us how to find ourselves again, after feeling lost. They remind us of our place and our home. Sometimes we forget that we are loved and that we owe a debt to others for making our lives better. All instruments played be me and multi-tracked through Logic Pro.
