Hello HIVE, I hope you are all doing well, enjoying the gift of being alive and living life to the fullest—come what may.

Today, I am continuing a three-part series that I began last week—a cathartic reflection on my experience during the double earthquake that struck La Guaira, Venezuela, on June 24th. In the previous post (which I invite you to read to better follow the narrative thread), I recounted the first two days I spent responding to an urgent call for help and solidarity. We were able to provide support to a man—a father, now a widower—who was left devastated by the disaster as he recovered the bodies of his four family members from the rubble of a collapsed building.

In this second chapter, I want to express my disappointment and displeasure regarding those who control the country’s authorities. Beyond any political leaning, I wish to highlight the inhumanity that power breeds within the human heart. The day began poorly; upon arriving in La Guaira, we were involved in an accident. Our group—a fairly large number of people—was traveling from Caracas to La Guaira in three pickup trucks and a 42-seater bus. At one point, due to a lapse in attention on the road, the pickup truck I was in had to brake suddenly to make way for a fire truck. It appears the driver of the bus following us was not paying full attention to the road and collided with our pickup.

That event set us back significantly; we arrived in Catia la Mar (an area in La Guaira) around midday, where we stopped to await instructions from the Minister of Public Works, who was directing where the various groups should go. An hour later, we were instructed to head to the Hugo Chávez Frías housing complex, which had been severely affected by the earthquakes.

When we arrived at the site, they gave us safety gear and additional tools—on top of what we had brought ourselves—and took us to a vacant lot across from the housing complex. They had us pose for photos and videos, all while dressed in the uniforms of a government agency. At first, I didn’t think much of it—after all, they’re just putting on a show, crafting their own narrative—but then they ordered us to clear brush on that lot. That’s when I got angry and refused to do anything. Several other workers joined me in the protest. I mean, how could they? We have the tools to help—at the very least—recover the bodies of the deceased, yet they want us to clear brush? I wasn’t having it; I was furious. A scene started to unfold because of me—I wasn’t about to waste my time on that. If I’m going to do that, I might as well stay home, anxious and glued to the news on social media.

The incident reached the minister’s ears, and we were sent to help clear rubble within the housing complex to provide access for the firefighters—who, supposedly, "have the proper equipment to carry out that task safely." That wasn't true, though; the fire chief approached me to ask about the masks we were wearing and remarked, "I really wish we were provided with this kind of protection." I took off my mask and gave it to him. We weren't actually using that protective gear for anything. I won't lie—the stench of death and decay was overwhelming—but those firefighters were the ones tasked with recovering the bodies; they clearly needed the protective gear more than I did.

We were there until 9 p.m.—having left home at 6 a.m.—and were given only a piece of bread to eat. I was fed up and wanted to go home; it felt like a wasted day of my life. I had agreed to go to La Guaira with them because I thought we would be helping—even if we couldn’t rescue anyone alive, being able to help families see the bodies of their loved ones is invaluable. But, in truth, all we did was feed into the media narrative pushed by those in power.

I was left deeply disappointed by these heartless human beings—though, in truth, I expected nothing more from them. I had simply hoped that we would truly be able to help; it is deeply saddening to witness such a reality. This is the second installment of these devastating chronicles. It is not my intention to cause any distress to those who perished, their families, or the HIVE community; rather, this is my way of finding catharsis—a means to release the energy I absorbed during my time in La Guaira. I hope you will tune in for the next and final chapter, where I will share MY TRUTH—my own personal account of what I believe truly transpired during this intense, energy-charged event. I hope you find it meaningful. Good vibes.
