My understanding is the syllable count is a whole lost in translation thing. But I could be wrong. Haiku is a hotly contested subject in English. But even English haiku should have multiple meanings to capture the spirit of haiku. There should be a pivot or aha moment ... the moment of enlightenment.

First there are poppies ... they signify death, but also the end of hostilities
fritterlaria ... sounds like frolicking /checkered existence
then you have the peace of lilies

So we have seasonal/nature observation and we also have metaphorical narrative.

You read Kanji ... that is amazing. Did you teach there or are Japanese? I lived near Hiroshima for a while.
