The days of being a starving musician are finally coming to an end, with what seems to be the surge of the lower, middle, and upper class making their way onto the cryptocurrency market — coinbase.com stating that their site saw a surge of 40,000 verified accounts in just one day during the month of May, 2017 — it is safe to assume that soon if not already, everybody’s uncle, parents, and grandparents will be trying to take a piece of the “crypto-pie”.

Living in the West, a land where cronyism’s and capitalism’s love child in the music industry is comparable to being connected to a hospital ‘food tube’ without the knowledge of the tube even existing. The masses are controlled by the industry by having their vision narrowed to only a cross section of massive amounts existing music. Living in a large city such as Toronto this is more evident than ever, aspiring full-time musicians that use analog instruments such as guitars, drums, and bass guitars find themselves having to work multiple jobs, go into debt with the greedy banks, and every month barely manage to scrape together enough cash to feed themselves let alone pay rent. Meanwhile aspiring rappers that are flaunting their stacks of hundred dollar bills, record label deals, and living a far more financially free life. All this because the music industry is currently capitalizing on rap musics popularity wave and has the means to pour millions of dollars into Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube to promote the living Rothschild out of their ‘product’.

Step in cryptocurrencies, specifically currencies such as the Steem Dollar (SBD) and Artbyte (ABY). These two and amongst some other cryptocurrencies are game changers to the music industry, they hold the potential to dismantle and obliterate the monopoly that the record labels and music agencies have held for so many decades. Steemit and Artbyte are still in their infancy, but they do have a fast growing number of active users, supporters, and investors. I have no doubt in my mind that by 2020 a talented musician with a small to no following can grow their fan base and income to an amount where they can become full time musicians and by doing so not having to spend 7 to 9 hours a day washing dishes, time which they can spend writing new songs.

Mark your calendars, Tune your guitars, and get a microphone, the days of financial freedom for musicians and all walks of artists are creeping up on us. We truly live in exciting times, and if you're reading this article on this website I know you believe that too.
