Interesting topic. I could say that for a foreigner one of the most difficult languages to learn is the Bulgarian language - my mother language.
Yeah, you can learn some basics to understand at about 30-35% of the speech but you will need time to fully understand everything.
One of the strangest and hardest things to understand is that we have a lot of adjectives describing things. By many adjectives I mean, for example, those for distance - here, here at hand, there, far, farther, farthest, and farthest as there is a certain word for there which I don't know what the translation should be.
In our language, there are many expressions and words with the same meaning, but depending on what context they are in they mean different things. Example - I wrote a bit about the distance a bit earlier, to do a breakdown just for "here by me" we have at least one 10 expressions. If you're not local you might even think someone is abusing someone with obscenities.
We also have the word "takovata" you can replace anything with, verb, noun, or adjective. Sometimes, even if you don't feel like it, you can make a whole sentence out of just that word by repeating it a few times with different inflections. Often used when you forget or switch off for an exact word during a conversation.
