In August 1962, 45-year-old US President Kennedy was on vacation and read a book that literally saved the world from nuclear war two months later.
The book "The guns of August". The main story of the book is how European leaders in the early 20th century fell asleep in the deadliest war of the time, the Great War, and none of them actually wanted to go to war.
After reading this book, Kennedy vowed that he would never make the easy decision to go to war because he would fall like the European leaders of World War I.
Two months later, the Cuban Missile Crisis began. Kennedy opposed most of the decisions of his military cabinet and chose the path of resistance to Kruchchev, without unleashing what could become a nuclear war. He refused to listen to the generals and use the intriguing game theories of the Randguilds to outsmart the Soviet Union.
He kept reminding himself of August's gun traps.
Often in the business or personal sphere, we sleep at work, porters, partners, relations, not really realizing ourselves and our main goals.
Guns of August should be good reading for people interested in a person's tendency to make mistakes at major historical events and how to be more aware and decisive.
