Like many of you, I've been seeing more and more garbage on the site recently. As more and more members join, the total volume of dreck will of course increase. Perhaps the percentage of junk posts won't change dramatically from its already high levels, but the raw numbers will inevitably go up.
When Will The Beta Stage End?
I have no freaking idea. At some point, the Steemit.com corporate overlords will decide to Go Big. I have no idea how much cash they have on hand, but they certainly have a lot of Steem in reserve. They of course couldn't cash out all at once, Steem's price would crater due to supply/demand factors, but they could slowly raise USD by doing so in dribs and drabs. But perhaps I'm thinking too America-centric; test-market a Go Big strategy in Korea first? Will they make a big move into traditional advertising? Thirty seconds during the SuperBowl? (I am only halfway kidding.) Or something more targeted to people already active on social media?
What Is To Be Done?
There's so much merde already here, it'll just get worse. How to improve the ability to separate the wheat from the chaff? I recently posted an offhand comment to a post that was complaining about the volume of spam and other garbage here:
Maybe Steemit needs some form of customizable filters so you could for instance filter out anyone with a Reputation below 42, or anyone who had posted more than 19 times in the last week, or anyone who was muted by 4 or more people who you followed. You could set the filters how you wanted. I'm not a web developer, but from what I know about programming, I think things like that would be quite possible.
I propose that ideas like this should be pursued. I've been here six months now and have so far seen only minor tweaks to the UX/UI design.
But I have to admit that I'm pretty clueless about how much the Witnesses here have the ability to make changes like this versus what the Steemit.com corporate overlords will accept.
