Donald Trump is set to address the nation tonight about Covid-19. If his recent tweet is any indication,

he’ll downplay its potential severity in the U.S. and attack those who suggest otherwise.

Just yesterday, Dr. Nancy Messonnier, the CDC Director of the Center for the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases raised the alarm:

”As more and more countries experience community spread, successful containment at our borders becomes harder and harder. It’s not a question of if this will happen but when this will happen and how many people in this country will have severe illnesses.
...Disruption to everyday life might be severe...
...We are asking the American public to prepare for the expectation that this might be bad.”

But the Trumpist echo chamber might already be developing a response (for example, here) that fits their “Deep State” worldview, by suggesting that since Messonnier “is the sister of the former Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein who appointed Special Counsel Robert Mueller”, her statements are suspect.

If the scale of what Messonnier is warning about is right, TPTB would have a strong incentive to downplay it. Our just-in-time delivery system couldn’t handle large numbers of people heeding her advice and preparing for what she suggests is coming:

If Covid-19 turns out to have a huge economic impact in America, what might the government’s response be? Hong Kong is resorting to helicopter money, might something like that happen here too? And, if so, would it actually help?
