The Second Face Of The Nigeria School System

Hello Steemians, take a little time to read on the second face of the Nigerian education system and its effects on students.

So today, we had a practical session for Entrepreneurship Studies (ENS) and we were supposed to learn how soap making is done. But how do we learn when the practical class was attended by eight departments (Animal Science, Food Science, Chemical Engineering, Agricultural Economics, Soil science, Crop Science, Agricultural Extension, Forestry/wildlife Tech), all in a small lecture hall that cannot contain more than 150 people but we had no choice.

Now talking about the second face of the Nigerian education system, the second face actually means the bad part or the part which contributes to student's failure.

Sitting in the lecture hall waiting for the arrival of the lecturer, I saw more students troop in and I could only wonder where the students are going to sit and how convenient will be place be for us. Finally, the practical coordinator entered the lecture hall and practical was to commence. Seeing the nature of the lecture hall compared to the population of students, I was only waiting for the coordinator to change the venue, but to my surprise, he concluded that people who have no seat should either stand of stay outside.

Once again, there was calmness in the lecture hall as already fixed their selves in between other people as the lecturer commenced with the soap making practical and asked some students to help out with different areas where needed while he do the talking.

I began to wonder;

• How will students learn in the congested lecture hall
• How do students understand what is being taught when some of them are behind others who are very tall and standing in front
• When computing the report, what do we all write down since it was just an un-serious practical (even though its serious to the lecturer)

In summary, I had to conclude its one bad side of the Nigerian education system (not just in my school) and some of the limiting factors are;

• Lack of facilities
• Limited number of lectures
• Lack of skilled personnel

I believe if these factors and many more factors which didn't my list are put in place, I bet the education system in Nigeria will see a great turn around.
