Hello there, this is my entry to the new "Battle Mage Secret Weekly Challenge!". If you want to participate or know more about the challenge, click here. This week we have to formulate a strategy with the Explosive Weaponry ruleset.

RULESET: Explosive Weaponry

With the Explosive Weaponry ruleset, all units gain the Blast ability.

The Explosive Weaponry ruleset is very simple and easy to understand as all monsters will have the Blast ability. So, the adjacent units will take additional damage divided by 2 and rounded up.

A unit with a 'Reflection shield' ability is very useful as it soaks the damage and will protect the unit from the blast damage.

Let's see how this ruleset affects my lineup and how I strategies for the following battle. But first, let's focus on my lineup.

My Lineup

This is my lineup for the battle

Position
Summoner/Monsters
Summoner
Obsidian
Position 1
Chain Golem
Position 2
Oaken Behemoth
Position 3
Regal Peryton
Position 4
Goblin Psychic
Position 5
Doctor Blight
Position 6
Magi of Chaos

This was a whooping 46-mana cap battle and it had the following rulesets:

  • Unprotected - Monsters do not have any armour and do not get armour from abilities or Summoner Buffs.

  • Explosive Weaponry - All monsters have the Blast ability.

All elements were active except Water and Death. As it was a high mana cap battle and had a lot of active elements. It was easier for me to choose my lineup.

I chose the Obsidian as it increased 1 magic attack damage of all the friendly units and I was going for a massive offensive lineup. So, mages were a good choice.

I used the Chain Golem as my tank. It costs 8 mana but comes with the 'Void' and 'Shield' abilities which were very useful during this battle as I was expecting magic attacks from my opponents as well. These two abilities make it one of the best tanks in the game. It dealt 3 melee attack damage as well. So, it was a good choice for this position.

Oaken Behemoth came in the next position. It is another powerful attacker and a good defender. I used it as a secondary tank in this lineup. But its attacking strength is incredible. It dealt multiple attack types, melee and magic attacks. Although the armour was not present in this battle it still had a good amount of health.

In the next position, I placed the Regal Peryton. It is another mage which dealt 2 magic damage and came with incredible speed. Its 'flying' ability combined with good speed is very effective, especially against melee and ranged attackers. It just costs 5 mana and had 6 hp as well.

Goblin Psychic came in the next position. Although it costs 1 more mana than the previous one and deals the same amount of damage. It compensated this price with its Tank Heal ability and *Affliction ability. Both of these work well with a strong tank at the front of the battle.

In the fifth position, I placed the Doctor Blight. This is an interesting unit, costing just 4 mana and dealing 1 magic damage with just 4 health. Its stats might not look impressive but the abilities it comes with are so powerful. The 'poison' is a nice addition along with 'affliction' which makes it a deadly unit for the enemy tanks.

Last but not least was the Magi of Chaos, another magic attacker used just for its raw attacking strength. This dealt 3 magic attack damage and came with 6 health.

Now that my lineup was set let's talk about my strategy for this game.

My Strategy

As this was a 46 mana cap battle and had two unrestrictive rulesets, I had some choice as to how I wanted to play this. I thought about it and went with full offence by using heavy magic attacks and units dealing strong attacks and focused less on my defence.

However, I used two good tanks at the front of the lineup in the form of Chain Golem and Oaken Behemoth. Both of these also had strong attacking strength so they fit right into my plan.

In hindsight, I left my back line a little weaker, especially with the Unprotected ruleset I was taking some risks. But I was trusting in my attacking strength.

I will share my battle here, which I have uploaded to YouTube. Battle Link

As expected it was a quick battle, it has to be with the combination of these two rulesets...right? My opponent focused on the melee attacks and surprised me with his sneak and opportunity attacks.

I was not expecting it and my backline was much weaker. While I was losing units one after the other from the end of the lineup. Both units at the front of my lineup held the initial onslaught and did the most of heavy lifting by eliminating many monsters.

My opponent also had a strong unit at the front but after it went down, all the other cards came down like a pack of cards and the explosive weaponry combined with my attacking strength proved fatal.

The battle ended in only 2 rounds. It was a closely fought battle but I got the win at the end.

Conclusion

Explosive Weaponry is a tough ruleset and it can be challenging to defend your units properly. I went with a heavy tank and supported it with another secondary tank that can take the blast damage easily.

Combining it with other rulesets sometimes you don't have enough to work with, especially with a limited number of active elements. I resort back to the fundamentals of the game. Using strong tanks, shielding my weaker units properly somewhere in the middle of the lineup. Using extra armour to protect them even more etc. Sometimes getting back to the basics is better. And this ruleset is one of those. Let me know how you deal with the Even Stevens ruleset.
