There are a small amount of big and popular names who manage to do it pretty well, but... They are still a minority and these issues are so important they in my opinion should not be relegated to a minority.

I lean towards the idea many of the larger personalities that are left unmolested are controlled opposition. The powers that be love controlling the conversation which leads to the necessity of voicing some of the more noticeable wrongs that are impossible to hide. I think it's not only to give those who see a sense of solidarity to keep them in the boiling water longer (because they wrongly assume a shift is always just about to occur), but also acts as a lightning rod to identify real problems from those who may act against their systems.
