A few weeks ago, we decided to go for a drive to the countryside. What better place than to go to Kampung ( kampung means village) Telaga Air Village and have our lunch there.
Telaga Air is about 45 minutes drive from my house and is ideal for a half-day getaway. It is situated at the estuary of the Sibu River and is a fishing village. As such people come here during the weekends to buy fresh seafood at reasonable prices from the fishermen or eat the freshly prepared seafood at the hawker stalls.
A fishing boat is under repair.
I just loved the beautiful scenery here. You can see the fishing boats along the river bank.
These two mascots add an air festivity.
Two rows of stalls situated along the main road of the village sell all types of local cakes, snacks and goodies.
A variety of pickled fruits are available for sale. The more popular ones are pickled "kendondong" and pickled 'belimbing api". The pickled fruits taste sweet and a little tangy.
Another common snack that can be found here is "keropok" ( or prawn crackers) which are packed in plastic bags.
This particular stall is selling freshly made local "kuih" (cakes) and cordial drinks.
At the end of the row of stalls, there is a small stage and a performance is in progress.
The highlight of our trip is the delightful seafood served at the hawker center. Here there are about 10 stalls selling all types of seafood ranging from fish, prawn, crab and cockle.
There is no need for any menu. You can just scoop which dish you like and the quantity that you want.
We ordered fresh coconut to go with our lunch.
The apple juice came in a gigantic cup. I have been to many restaurants, this is the biggest cup of apple juice that I have seen so far.
Telaga Air is also famous for its coconut and mango shake. After wandering around the village and enjoying the rural scenery, we decided to try the famous shake before heading home. I actually forgot to take photos of the shake, as we gulped the drinks as soon as they arrived.
We had an enjoyable morning In Telaga Air. It was a leisurely drive and we enjoyed the rural scenery along the way. The fresh air and riverine atmosphere is a welcome change from our city lifestyle.
