Hello, dear friends at Feathered Friends.

In this Show me a photo contest round 294, at the invitation of nelinoeva@nelinoeva, I’m sharing photos of this beautiful bird with a blue crest and green plumage, which I spotted during a visit to a hot springs resort, in Manizales, Colombia.

It is known in this region as the "Andean Barranquero" (Momotus aequatorialis).

In this photo—which is my favorite—this beautiful bird was sitting very calmly on a tree trunk.

Its long blue tail, which ends in a thickened tip, caught my attention. I found it very intriguing, and after looking up information on its function, it turns out that the Andean Barranquero swings it like a pendulum as a distraction tactic to ward off predators.

I was able to take photos of other birds of this same species in other parts of this park with its lush vegetation. Here they are.

It is omnivorous. It feeds on insects and larger animals, such as lizards and rodents. But it also eats tree fruits.

A very beautiful bird that I wasn’t familiar with because it’s a species found only in certain Andean regions, such as here in Colombia.
