It is a semi-autobiographical novel by Chetan Bhagat depicting his life during his period of studies at IIT, one of the premier Engineering Colleges of India. The protagonists Hari, Ryan, Alok and their life incidents during 4 years are the mainly discussed topics here. Hari, the narrator of the novel, belongs to a middle-class family and is not that concerned about his career, rather investing his time in love affairs with Neha, the only daughter of the Mechanical Engineering Department Chairman, Professor Cherian.

Alok, belonging to a typical lower-class Indian family, have faced struggles all through his life and is determined to do something better in life, tries to cut a good figure in the exams but couldn't do so. And the last one, Ryan, fit as a macho-man and belonging to a posh family, enjoying his life alone with a lot of money sent by his parents. These 3 characters often try to go against the flow by doing whatever they like, against the curricular rules. But life gives them a hit back turning them to be the last students of the class. Being depressed a lot by their deeds and not being able to score good, Alok attempts suicide and is narrowly escaped from death but suffered for a long time in the hospital. This moved their lives on, and they even being the last students, started to enjoy the life thinking that it is more important to stay alive than cutting a good score.
In this novel, the author from his personal experiences, highlighted the flaws and extremism a typical student faces due to the harshness of curricular education and the way to get rid of them. Being relatable with the mainstream life, the book turned out to be the best creation by the author with around 1.5 Million copies selling world-wide. It has been portrayed into 2 movies till date. One of which is 3 Idiots, being called as one of the most successful ones ever made in Bollywood industries
