I love string beans! My boyfriend would love your DIY trellis, as well. He's forever making ours out of sticks and twine and anything else he can find laying around! We had so many bugs this year on ours, as well, so I'll have to remember the garlic trick. We've done hot peppers in water and Neem oil, but I don't believe we've tried crushed garlic yet. Though lizards help, too! Lovely to see some greenery since we are in the dormant season here. :)
