Last week I did a pixel art speed challenge and somewhat cheated. I told myself I would do the whole thing in an hour or less and ended up breaking that rule. I finished up that one at about an hour and half. So, for this week I thought I would do it right. I did a one hour pixel art speed challenge. I decided to do something a bit simple just so I didn't get tripped up like last week. A mug of beer... it's been a long week, it's Friday and you know what I've got on my mind.
First things first, I've got to get an outline of what I'm doing. A mug is pretty simple, just a rectangle and a handle... although I started to get tripped up on the handle and wanted to do a better one I've got to keep moving, it's a speed challenge and NO CHEATING this time!
In this step I'm just adding a few details to the mug and the foam top.
Next, I filled inside the outlines with color. I started to try a different color on the glass handle as you can see, but decided to just go with it.
Removing outlines and adding some foam definition.
At this step I added a few more details to the foam and some bubbles in the beer. I also did some basic shading on the bottom of the mug and where the handles meet the outside of the mug.
This is the step that almost cost me the challenge. I really wanted the glass to look like glass and although I thought I had chosen an easy item for this go around, glass can be kind of tricky to make it look right! Either way, I chose a look and moved on.
At this point, I've got about 15 minutes left so I'm just looking for quick ways to improve the overall look. I decided to add a highlight on the glass.
The previous step was quick and I still have 10 minutes left. I decide to shade the handle. Of course, I would have liked to spend a bit more time on this, but I'm sticking to the challenge. And that's it! A pixel art mug of beer in 1 hour.
