Sinopsis

No necesita explicación.

Me volveré feo y horrible.

Wilde is known in the entire world for his only novel; The Picture of Dorian Gray, published in 1890; a novel that caused a great scandal in its time; because for critics it was extremely immoral book, and Wilde was a very controversial writer.

Synopsis

The Picture of Dorian Gray narrates the story of Dorian, a very handsome young man from London's high society at the 19th century with a normal life, until he meets Lord Henry Wotton, a man with an unconventional lifestyle. The meeting takes place in the house of the painter Basil Hallward, who is finishing Dorian's portrait. Stupefied by the beauty of his portrait, and with the idea already imposed by Lord Henry that the only really valuable things in life are beauty and youth; Dorian will make a wish and from there he and his portrait will begin a journey to perdition.

What is the novel about?

The Picture of Dorian Gray is a fantasy novel but it is also seasoned with a touch of history, as Wilde develops the novel around the human being and his relationship with art and how it is seen and judged by his appearance and the image its projects to others members of society.
The story is about how a young man can be corrupted through manipulation in the name of preconceived standards of beauty and youth. Lord Henry Wotton with this phrase: "the only thing worth pursuing in life is beauty, and the satisfaction of the senses" impresses Dorian and as Lord Henry's bad influence gains ground on Dorian, the young man begins to commit bad acts against those around him, in search of his well-being and pleasure, reflecting these acts in a very peculiar way in his portrait.

What can we find when reading The Picture of Dorian Gray?

alt

Imagen

  • The cult of the person not based on his knowledge or his inner self, but based on his external beauty.

Beauty is far superior to genius. It needs no explanation.

  • Dorian's narcissism reflected in the absorbed contemplation of his portrait and his subsequent obsession.

...How sad it is! I will become ugly and hideous. But this painting will remain forever young. It will never be older than this day in June...

  • The issue of free will and how to use it as a shield to achieve a purpose not matter at what cost.

Conscience and cowardice are really the same things, Basil. Conscience is the trade-name of the firm.

  • All this compendium of situations could lead the reader to make an introspection to meditate about the nature of the human being: the good, the bad, his virtues and mistakes, etc.
  • Despite the fact that the novel was written in the 19th century, all these themes are still relevant today.

Structure, style and characters of The Picture of Dorian Gray

Structure

  • The novel consists of a prologue and 20 chapters.

Style

  • The conversations are fluid, funny and bring learning to the reader.
  • The novel is full of metaphors that are fortunately easy to understand.
  • The scenes are described with great vividness, in the best style of the meetings in the great salons of 19th century England.

Characters

  • The main characters are three and I would describe them as the good the bad and the ambiguous. The painter Basil Hallward is the noble and puritan painter who tries to save Dorian's soul and mind; Lord Henry Wotton the cynical, shameless who will lead Dorian to every possible doom and the protagonist Dorian Gray who will face a struggle between preserving the beauty of his soul or his external beauty.

  • The secondary characters are closely related to Dorian Gray and how he will change the lives of most of them, so do not lose sight of them during the reading.

What did I like about the novel?

alt

Imagen

  • It is a novel loaded with a lot of philosophy; where behavior, morality, the meaning of existence are treated with great acuity among its different characters, each one having a very different opinion, generating many enriching debates.

  • It is an educational novel, Oscar Wilde through his story makes clear the extensive knowledge he had about art, religion, poetry, history, culture.

  • The novel keeps us in suspense, always waiting for the next twist that will give its main characters, unexpected, absurd and sentimental twists; thus adding a lot of excitement and expectation for the becoming chapters.

What did I find tedious about the novel

alt

Image

  • I found it tedious because of the extensive description of the different scenarios: the salons, the balls, the dinners, the meetings; there comes a time when the reading becomes monotonous.

  • Due to the century in which the novel was written, there is a deep sexism, women are considered as decorative objects, their role in society is practically null.

¿Would I recommend The Picture of Dorian Gray?

alt

Image

  • Yes, I would, the book can be read by young people and adults because it is easy to read and it deals with themes that are still being seen today; this themes has not lost relevance.

  • It is a book that can make us reflect on the morality and the ethics of 19th century society and our own, also leaving us with great learning about deep and transcendental issues.

  • At the end of the book each one of us will find the lesson about human behavior and its consequences.

  • I encourage you to read it and make your literary repertoire grow, you will not regret it.
