There is a popular saying where I'm from, New Year, new beginning. It means that entering into a new year brings forth a new batch of opportunities. Opportunities to be different from how you were the previous year. To be more successful or change a habit or take certain risk that would ultimately be beneficial to you... risks you would most likely not take.
I've witnessed people often say it with an unmistakable vigor that convinces others in their circle that their attitude between 11:59pm of December 31st and 12am of January 1st somehow metamorphosis in a minute into something different and often opposite to what they were.
I often laughed at the concept of that and expect them to adhere to such perceived change for a month at most before they reverse to whom they really are. Water always finds its level.
I didn't understand until a recent realization that New Year isn't the magical beginning of something new and different, but the hope of something better. Sometimes it's the hope that kills.
Accepting who you are and thriving irrespective of the day is a panacea for many lost souls. However, the defective attributes of a person should be consciously worked on just like a sculptor slowly chisels through a stone to make art.
Attitudes that characterize a person can be changed for the better, but it deserves work and procrastination is a thief of time. Imagine refusing to make efforts to effect change simply because it's the middle of the year. It is quite sad because the opportunities that you would have come across as a result of your attitudinal change will be lost.
I'm saying the concept of making self improvement on the 1st of January is not idle and one should do that anytime in the year. That kind of New Year could be any day. Take that vacation, learn a new language, walk out on that abusive relationship...you can do all that once you make up your mind irrespective of whether it is March 14 or August 9.
Be better because time waits for no one.
A Snap for you.
