Today is saturday, 1st Boisakh, 1425 Bangabdo. Another new year come today in Bangali calender. Bengalis awoke this morning in the light of the new sun. Today, people of all walks of hearts will meet the Bengalis, at the festival. There will be no discrimination between rich and poor, not rich-poor discrimination.
Bengali New Year, also called Pohela Boishakh, is the traditional new year day of the Bengali people. It is celebrated on 14 April.
The festival is celebrated with processions, fairs and family time. The traditional greeting for Bengali New Year is শুভ নববর্ষ "Shubho Nabobarsho" which is literally "Happy New Year". The festive Mangal Shobhajatra is organized in Bangladesh. In 2016, the UNESCO declared this festivity organized by the Dhaka University as a cultural heritage of humanity.
By joining the festival Bangali will be enlightened by her identity as her heritage, cultural identity and glorious nationalism. This consciousness of Bengal combined the whole nation, gave inspiration to the struggle for establishing its own rights in the liberation war. Soon after the first Baishak, Bengali revived through joy and festivities
The Bengali New Year is observed as a public holiday in Bangladesh. People wear festive dress with women desking their hair with flowers. White-red color combinations are particularly popular.
Bangladeshi eat festive foods on Pohela Boishakh. These include panta bhat (watered rice), ilish vaja (fried hilsa fish), and various special bharta (pastes).
