Dear Hiver!

A few weeks ago, I was walking through Havana a vibrant city that, as a capital, brings together the millions who live there and the many who visit, creating a rich tapestry of perspectives and cultures that find expression in the everyday life of its streets.

My steps led me along the busy San Rafael Boulevard. Upon reaching its end at Galiano Street, I discovered a series of murals featuring portraits of Cuban musicians. Executed with excellent technique and craftsmanship, they form an open-air gallery.

The first mural features Rosita Fornés known as "Cuba’s vedette" for her work across various artistic disciplines, including singing and acting in theater, film, and television. She was an artist deeply beloved by the Cuban people, possessing immense talent and an illustrious career, yet she remained remarkably humble; she was also a recipient of national awards in theater, television, and music.

At his side is Juan Formel, creator of the Songo genre, as well as a bassist, composer, and orchestra leader. In 1969, he founded Los Van Van a legendary Cuban son ensemble with which he won a Grammy Award in 2000 in the category of Best Salsa Performance. I remember that they played for us at the University of the Arts, and we had a fun night of dancing.

Next come two other greats: Beny Moré and Chano Pozo. Beny is the star of Cuban music a popular performer who, like few others, mastered the Son Montuno, the Mambo, and the Bolero. With a unique style and personality, he is deeply beloved by the people.

Chano Pozo was a percussionist and composer who burst onto the jazz scene with the power of the rumba and Afro-Cuban drums. He also spent time in New York, where he left a significant musical legacy alongside Dizzy Gillespie.

The next mural features Omara Portuondo and Emiliano Salvador. The former known as "la novia del feeling" (the sweetheart of the filin style) and a key voice of the Buena Vista Social Club is renowned worldwide for her interpretations of boleros, filin, and son music. I have had the opportunity to interact with her, and I can tell you that, beyond being an excellent singer, she is a down-to-earth and charismatic woman.

Emiliano Salvador left a deep mark on jazz. As a pianist and composer, he possessed a distinctive style the result of blending the roots of Cuban music with the language of jazz.

The San Rafael Boulevard a vibrant artery in the Centro Habana municipality originated as the old "Camino de los Amigos" (Path of Friends). It was originally shorter, until 1830, when the Spanish Governor Joaquín Solis ordered it to be expanded to its current length.

By the late 19th and early 20th centuries following the demolition of the walls that once protected Old Havana San Rafael emerged as a major commercial hub in the city. It housed prominent shops and businesses, such as the "El Encanto" department store, Gastón Bared’s jewelry store, and the record labels Columbia and Kubaney. Today, the street is lined with various businesses, and on one of its corners stands the Alicia Alonso Theater, home to the National Ballet of Cuba.

A view of the murals from the sidewalk across the street. The scale of the murals made it impossible to capture them all, but you can just make out that the next figure is the singer-songwriter César Portillo de la Luz.

César Portillo de la Luz, a guitarist and composer, is the author of the famous bolero "Contigo en la distancia." He is one of the essential figures in Cuban music and a founder of the filin movement, alongside other notable artists such as José Antonio Méndez and Elena Burke.

The image of Joseito Fernández could not be missing from one of these murals. This singer-songwriter who learned his craft through practical experience rather than formal musical training was known as "The King of Melody." He cultivated quintessentially Cuban musical genres, such as the guaracha, the bolero, and the son. He composed "La Guantanamera," a song that brought him worldwide fame and remains, to this day, one of the most recognizable anthems of Cuban identity on a global scale.

A small plaque tucked between the murals satisfied my curiosity about who created them. I learned that there is a project called "Topart" (an abbreviation for todo por el arte "everything for art"), and that six artists were responsible for the murals.
These artists did a magnificent job from the challenging task of selecting specific figures from among the many prominent musicians in our Cuban musical tradition, to the skillful choice and execution of a painting style that blends pop art with realism. I would like to congratulate them for this work they have gifted us.

Art lives within the everyday life of the Boulevard. As people pass by, caught up in their daily rush, they sometimes overlook the murals yet at other times, they break into a smile or share a cheerful remark, surprised to see our famous musicians still with us, defying oblivion; for the mark they left behind is eternal. Come to the San Rafael Boulevard and experience this brilliant blend of visual arts and music for yourself.

Querido Hiver!
