My dear Hiver!

If you follow me, you already know that lately I’ve been treating my father with natural therapies to improve the condition of his feet, which have been deteriorating due to his heart's poor function.

I decided to undergo geotherapy for 15 days, which requires me to travel daily to my sister's house in a coastal town called Playa Baracoa. So, I decided to take advantage of the proximity to the sea to enjoy a summer dip in its waters.

I set off for the beach. Upon reaching the street that separates the houses from the coast, I was surprised to find this small but charming playground. It is good to see that the children have a place to play.

This street is home to most of the businesses—small restaurants and cafés—that have sprung up following Cuba's economic opening in recent years.

Most have a rustic appearance, utilizing both modern construction techniques and traditional ones, such as palm-thatch roofs.

I am not from here, but I believe this area is considered the best beach in Artemisa province. It is visited by people coming from other municipalities and even from neighboring Havana—Cuba's capital—which is just a kilometer away.

For those of us born on an island, our relationship with the sea is a special blend of admiration, respect, and friendship. We enjoy the sea with friends and family, and many also earn their livelihood from it; it is an unwavering friend that always listens to and counsels us.

Although I was determined to enjoy the swim, I arrived feeling cautious, haunted by the memory of a good friend who had recently died at the mouth of the river on my native island. He had been fishing when the current swept him just a short distance—far enough that he could no longer touch the bottom—and, exhausted from swimming, he sank forever.

Standing before the sea, which appeared so calm and peaceful, I thought about all the life sheltered beneath its surface. Millions of animals and plants live lives of which we are usually unaware—or even completely ignorant.

I had so many photos of the sea and the land when I realized that the sky was sheltering me with the beautiful design of its clouds.

Before heading into the water, I decided to stop and buy some rice at this shop—which operates like a small market where you can buy rice, sugar, spaghetti, chicken, ham, flour, tomato paste, and so on.

There are businesses in the area offering a variety of products and services. These range from a post office and a telecommunications company branch to a small shop selling bread and pastries, another selling ice cream, and many more...

Even though it is still summer, the beach is not seeing many visitors. The country's shortage of oil and gasoline makes transportation to Playa Baracoa difficult and expensive. Although electric vehicles have become trendy, they are still not easy to purchase.

The El Barco Bar-Restaurant boasts the most original design. Inspired by old wooden ships, it is a truly beautiful and cozy spot.

A few days ago, leasorfro@leasorfro asked me if it was possible to sleep on the beach in a tent... Well, of course! Although there are many houses near the beach that rent out rooms, you can also sleep right on the sand—haha! It is a very safe place for visitors. So, the option you choose depends on your budget and preferences if you decide to spend some time at this beautiful beach north of Havana.
