These animals require sunbathing, they do it on rocks, stones, fallen trees, dead trunks, or on fence posts. Beyond this requirement, its habitat is flexible. This iguana can live in thickets next to the beach, dry, humid forests and in disturbed areas such as pastures. They have been found in gardens and in urban areas.
Both males and females are highly territorial and will defend their refuge. Males tend to become more aggressive and have a large territory. This animal often does not engage in fights, but if it does, the signal is that it inflates its gular bag of air. If the other male does not take the signal there may be a fight. Females take this signal differently, since males do the same to attract the opposite sex.
