If I had a country home and a well, I would for sure want an electric water pump for my general use, but I also would install a manual pump for emergencies! My sister lives where she has well water and a septic tank, and when the power goes out, so does her water! That isn't so much of an issue if you're off-grid, but something could still break perhaps. I like having backups for things so you're not completely stuck if something goes wrong.
At a place where we went camping when I was in school, they had a very old manual pump and had us all use it so we could taste how much minerals were in the local water (it really tasted metallic!). I could imagine using one to water the garden and stuff. :)
