I'm back again, a bit earlier than I thought I would be.
After breakfast I went to the beach, where the only interesting thing to see was a ship that was anchored just in front of the hostel:
After taking the pic, I bumped in Jack from the UK (we actually met at the Singapore airport already; he helped me out with long exposure pic from previous post since I couldn't press the trigger myself), and we agreed on taking a taxi to the town of Nadi, if we'd be able to haggle over a good price with the driver. The original price, as stated by the receptionist, was supposed to be $25 FJ, which amounts to about €10, but we were able to get the ride for $10 FJ. It was even better, since Jack's roommate Bas (from the Netherlands) joined us as well, and we split the bill three ways.
The town itself is awfully uninteresting, especially today with almost every shop closed because of the national holiday.
Despite that, we got an interesting experience from a local guy who almost literally took our hands the moment we stepped out of the taxi, and led us to his shop, where we got served with kava (a local drink made from the root of Piper methysticum). From what I've read on the internet, you should feel slight euphoria and relaxation after drinking it, but the thing I noticed the most after one cup was tingly, numbing feeling in my mouth and throat. After second cup, I might have loosened up a bit.
After that I went to get a new sim card, to be able to speak with friends and family, since the wi-fi is exceedingly slow in the hostel, and we grabbed some basic groceries from the only corner shop that was open.
We spotted some locals selling fruit and veggies on the sidewalk, and I bought about 10 bananas and 10 mangos for $4 FJ all together, which was quite a bargain, compared to $20 FJ I paid for a cheeseburger in hostel kitchen.
We found a guy to take us back (also for $10 FJ), and I asked him to stop on the way back to go and buy some cigarettes (awful habit, I know), where I made the second photo; there was a homeless Indian man sitting in front of the store, and I gave him some change and in return he agreed to pose for my photo:
