I went to the supermarket yesterday and my experience got me thinking of how easy and interesting the world has become due to several seemingly simple innovations. It was a day to the birthday of my brother, Eniobafe and I had gone to purchase a surprise birthday cake to celebrate him.
Prior to today, I usually hired the service of a professional baker whenever I needed to make a cake. Most times I had to pay ahead of time and make selections from several samples which are usually pictures downloaded from the internet. Sadly, what I eventually get at times doesn't look as appealing as what I selected and there were times when the baker takes up too many contracts and finds it difficult to deliver my order at the appropriate time. This has always been disappointing.
So I decided to do things differently this time around and went to purchase a ready-made cake at FoodCo Supermarket. There were several cakes on the display shelf with various sizes, colours and designs to choose from. I proceeded to select a medium-sized one with a purple design because it looked more masculine and the $10 price was within my budget. What made this more interesting was the fact that the top of the cake was blank and allowed the name of the celebrant to be written on it with the same colour of icing. This service is free in most supermarkets.
I directed the attendant to write 'HAPPY BIRTHDAY ENIOBAFE' on the cake, made my payment via my GT Bank Naira Mastercard and the whole transaction was done within few minutes. The cake looked lovely and I knew it would be almost impossible for anyone to know that it was readymade birthday cake except I disclose that information.
I felt relieved and reminisced on the whole thing as I waited for a taxi that would convey me home. I knew my choice of a ready-made cake was a wide decision which gave me ample time to attend to other tasks. In addition to this, I did not have to worry about being delayed by a baker or risk being offered a substandard or inferior product because I knew exactly what I would be receiving in exchange for my money before making payment. Eniobafe's birthday is today and I know he would definitely be excited and happy to see the surprise birthday cake.
