My research using a nationally representative data set showed that consumers are more concerned about the security of their health data, and less concerned about privacy. The difference seems to be that consumers perceive secure data, as private data.
Consumers also want to share their health data with doctors and health care staff to improve safe delivery of care. Willingness to share their health data with doctors increases when consumers have access and control of their own health data.
This is the first research of its kind to show the relationship between privacy and security on health data preferences. And, it is the first time that the factors of access and control are isolated and show a direct positive relationship on consumer data sharing preferences.
