What happens to human perception at death approaches ?
A remarkable 2023 study ( surge of neurophysiology coupling and connectivity of gamma oscillations in the dying brain ) reported a sudden surge of organized gamma activity and connectivity after withdrawal of ventilatory support. Particularly striking was increased connectivity within posterior brain regions associated with perception, including connections involving the visual cortex
Yet the finding invites reflection.
More than 1,400 years ago, long before EEG, neuroscience, or even knowledge of the visual cortex, the Qur’an described the moment when man confronts the reality from which he had previously been veiled:
**( You were certainly in heedlessness of this. Then We removed from you your covering, and your sight today is sharp.”
Qur’an — Surah Qaf 50:22**
How could prophet Muhammad have known this from himself ?
He lived more than fourteen centuries ago. He had no EEG, no knowledge of cortical networks, and no means of observing what happens inside a dying human brain.
And yet the Book he brought directs our attention to something science has only recently begun to explore: death may not be understood merely as an instantaneous extinguishing of perception
For the believer, this is not surprising.
The One who revealed the Qur’an is the One who created the eye, the brain, life and death:
Science has not shown us what lies beyond death. But sometimes, the more we discover, the more a verse revealed fourteen centuries ago makes us stop and think.
Who could speak with certainty about what awaits man when the veil of this life is removed—except the One who created him ?
