The Shwedagon Pagoda

(pagoda according to the English dictionary is a Hindu or Buddhist temple, in the form of many tiered tower, common in Asia countries)

  • it is also known as the great Dagon pagoda or golden pagoda
  • located west of the royal lake 114 acres inch singuttara hill in Yagon, Myanmar in Burma southeast of Asia.
  • It was designed and built by Okkalapa of Burma.
  • It is the oldest pagoda in Burma.

  • It is 105 metres high.
  • you take your shoes and socks off before entering out of respect for Buddha.
  • it is believed to be 2,500 years old.
  • it was constructed in May 11, 1824.

  • The structure was built with 8,688 sheets of gold.
  • It has 5,448 diamonds, 2,317 rubies, sapphires, and other gems both inside and outside.
  • The building is worth a whooping sum of nearly 3 billion US dollars.
  • It is the most sacred place for Buddhists in Burma,it attracts a large numbers of devotees every day.
