Hello everyone! Pozdrav svima!
This week I'm going to show you how to play when faced Wands Out ruleset. What to look for, what are benefits of this ruleset, how to counter it, what cards go well with it and finally showcase battle featuring this ruleset.
First of all lets see what this ruleset is all about. How to counter it or how to take advantage of it.
Main thing to do when faced with this ruleset is to try to use Phase, Void, Void Armor or Magic Reflect to counter magic attacks.
This ruleset mandates that only Magic attack monsters can be used. So logically you would want to boost their damage output. Unfortunately there isn't any monster that can do that, but luckily there are a couple of summoners that boost Magic attack of all monsters in your team.
The most popular of them all is Valnamor, Legendary Beta Water summoner, who boosts Magic damage, Speed and Health by 1.
If you don't have him, or you play only in Modern format, don't worry, there are great alternatives out there - here is the list of all summoners that boost Magic damage.
| Alric Stormbringer | Archmage Arius | Delwyn Dragonscale | Obsidian | Valnamor | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Set | Alpha/Beta | Beta Promo | Beta Promo | Chaos Legion | Beta |
| Rarity | Rare | Legendary | Common | Rare | Legendary |
| Splinter | Water | Dragon | Dragon | Earth | Water |
Since this ruleset is all about one type of attack you can try five different approaches, or combination of them. You can boost your damage (as mentioned in previous paragraph), reduce opponent's damage output, mitigate damage input, reflect damage back to your attacker or try to evade damage all together.
The same way you can boost Magic damage of your monsters, you can also reduce Magic damage of the opponent.
One way of doing that is using a summoner with ability to reduce enemy Magic damage. There are currently two summoners that can do that.
| Bortus | Thaddius Brood | |
|---|---|---|
| Set | Untamed | Chaos Legion |
| Rarity | Rare | Rare |
| Splinter | Water | Death |
But, unlike the magic damage boost, there are some monsters that can reduce the magic damage of the opponents with the Silence ability.
I will list only the monsters with Magic damage, because others are not subject to this ruleset.
Modern format:
| Death Elemental | Elven Mystic | Goblin Psychic | Sporcerer | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Set | Untamed | Untamed | Chaos Legion | Untamed |
| Rarity | Rare | Rare | Common | Epic |
| Splinter | Death | Neutral | Earth | Earth |
Wild format:
| Mushroom Seer | Phantom Soldier | Ruler of the Seas | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Set | Beta Reward | Beta Reward | Beta Reward |
| Rarity | Rare | Epic | Legendary |
| Splinter | Earth | Death | Water |
Another way to counter this ruleset is to try to avoid getting hit at all. You can do that with Phase ability which was introduced later in the game with Untamed set.
There are only three Magic attack monsters that have this ability.
| Djinn Oshannus | Efreet Elder | Void Dragon | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Set | Chaos Legion Reward | Untamed Reward | Chaos Legion |
| Rarity | Legendary | Rare | Legendary |
| Splinter | Water | Fire | Dragon |
But please take this in consideration, with Phase same evade formula applies like with Melee and Ranged attacks - Speed is king, Flying helps too.
Keep in mind there is also a summoner that gives Phase to the whole team. She is Dragon splinter Epic summoner - Sthispa of Riftwatchers set.
If you do plan on getting hit, it would be nice if that damage gets reduced on impact. Here is where Void Armor and Void abilities help.
Void Armor makes magic attacks hit Monster's armor before its Health and there are quite a few monsters that have this ability, but only three with Magic attack, all legendary cards.
| Agor Longtail | Djinn Muirat | Oaken Behemoth | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Set | Riftwatchers | Chaos Legion | Dice |
| Rarity | Legendary | Legendary | Legendary |
| Splinter | Dragon | Death | Earth |
There is also one summoner that gives Void Armor to the whole team. He is Life splinter Legendary summoner - Grandmaster Rathe of Chaos Legion set. He also provides additional +1 armor and Amplify ability to your team, making him very powerful and useful in various situations.
Nothing mitigates magic damage better then Void ability. That ability halves magic damage (rounded up), except for attack 1 which deals 0 damage.
Again, there are plenty of monsters with this ability, but only a handful with Magic attack.
In Modern format we have one representative in every splinter, but the Life splinter one is a Legendary soulbound reward card. You already saw that Djinn Oshannus of Water splinter and Void Dragon have Void, and here are the rest of them:
| Ancient Lich | Caladuum | Djinn Biljka | Theorosa Nightshade | Iziar | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Set | Untamed Reward | Dice | C.L. Reward | Dice | S.bound Reward |
| Rarity | Legendary | Legendary | Legendary | Legendary | Legendary |
| Splinter | Death | Fire | Earth | Death | Life |
It's also interesting that all these cards are of Legendary rarity.
In Wild format we have two cards, both work amazingly well in this ruleset.
| Phantom Soldier | Prismatic Energy | |
|---|---|---|
| Set | Beta Reward | Beta Reward |
| Rarity | Epic | Rare |
| Splinter | Death | Neutral |
Phantom Soldier in addition to Void also has Silence, and Prismatic Energy has Magic Reflect.
There are also two summoners, both of Legendary rarity, that give Void to the whole team.
| Mimosa Nightshade | Immortalis | |
|---|---|---|
| Set | Untamed | Chaos Legion |
| Rarity | Legendary | Legendary |
| Splinter | Death | Earth |
As you can see Mimosa Nightshade in addition to Void reduces enemy ranged damage by 1 and gives your whole team Affliction ability. And Immortalis reduces enemy health by 1 and gives your whole team Shatter ability that can be very useful when facing enemy with Void Armor in this ruleset. That's why we call Immortalis "The King" of Magic only battles.
And what if portion of the damage we receive gets reflected back to the attacker. That's why we have Magic Reflect ability. When hit with Magic damage, it does reduced Magic damage back to the attacker which is equivalent to the attacker's damage divided by 2, rounded up. The damage is reflected even if the attacker does not hit, like when we have Void. This ability is best utilized with Amplify.
Wild format has three Magic attack monsters with this ability, I already mentioned Prismatic Energy, and other two are both Legendary cards. But in Modern format there are only two Magic attack monsters with it. I already mentioned Djinn Muirat (he gets it at level 3) and other one is amazing Epic card with cleaver name - Lobstradamus.
| Elemental Phoenix | Gold Dragon | Lobstradamus | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Set | Alpha/Beta | Alpha/Beta | Untamed |
| Rarity | Legendary | Legendary | Epic |
| Splinter | Fire | Dragon | Water |
But there is also one summoner that gives Magic Reflect to the whole team. He is Death splinter Rare summoner - Owster Rotwell of Dice set.
Now let's get into the battle featuring Wands Out ruleset. Luckily, I found a perfect battle to showcase "The King" Immortalis and his Void in combination with Silence from couple of monsters in the team.

Ruleset in this battle was just perfect for a nice showcase of advantage the right choice of summoner brings to the table because of the low mana pool.
I will try to explain each part of the ruleset, so you get the better understanding what was I thinking when I picked my line-up.
When I saw the ruleset and available mana, it was a no-brainer for me - Immortalis is the king of these kind of matches. Paired with couple of monsters with Silence, only counter to this is to have monsters with two attack types, or maybe some Poison (like Doctor Blight). I made sure I got that part covered too with Oaken Behemoth and Runemancer Florre if my opponent chooses similar tactic.
But, my opponent chose Delwyn Dragonscale as summoner, quite understanding choice to boost his Magic attack damage. But his only chance was that his Chaos Dragon kills my monsters with Silence, which he didn't manage to do.
You can see the line-up from both teams in battle screenshot right after this section. I will go through my line-up and explain why was each card picked and put in that spot.
Earth splinter Legendary summoner that costs 6 mana. He buffs the team with
Void and Shatter.
-1 health to enemy monsters Void - Reduced damage from Magic attacks by half. Shatter - Target's armor is destroyed when hit by an attack from Monsters with Shatter. I chose this summoner because of all the reasons I already mentioned - he's absolute king of this ruleset. |
Earth splinter rare card. Costs 7 mana and has decent amount of health with 2 mana attack.
Return Fire - When hit with a Ranged attack, will return reduced half of damage back to their attacker. Repair - estores some armor to the friendly Monster whose armor has taken the most damage. I picked this monster as a tank because I needed someone with higher health to tank while the rest do the damage. |
Earth splinter legendary card. Costs 12 mana, but has 2 attack types - Melee and Magic.
Reach - This melee monster can attack from the second position on the team. Void Armor - Magic attacks hit this Monster's armor before its Health. I picked this monster to deal double damage from 2nd position and it can tank it needed. |
Earth splinter rare card. Costs 6 mana, has 2 Magic attack.
Tank Heal - Restores 1/3 of the tank's health each round. Affliction - It has a chance of applying Affliction on the target causing it to be unable to be healed. Silence - Reduces the Magic Attack of all enemy Monsters. I picked this monster to primarily to reduce enemy damage with Silence and heal the tank.
|
Earth splinter Legendary card. Costs 13 mana, but has 2 attack types - Ranged and Magic.
It has no special abilities but it doesn't need them when she does big damage and has a lot of health. I picked this monster because she is the main damage dealer of the team. |
Earh splinter rare card. Costs 9 mana and has 3 magic attack with
Taunt.
Taunt - Makes all enemy Monsters target this Monster (if they are able to). Forcefield - This Monster takes only 1 damage from attacks with power 5+. I picked this monster to split the damage from opponents team. |
This was quite long battle because the opponent did very little to none damage to my team.
My opponent had a Taunt monster (Iziar) in the back like I did, with Void ability so it took a bit more time for me to kill it, and when I finally did it got resurrected just to get killed again.
With his Iziar out of the way my team finally started doing some serious damage. His tank Prismatic Energy got afflicted so couldn't be healed and the reflected damage it did got neutralized by the Void.
My team managed to take out two of his monsters in this round.
It all almost finished in round 5 but his Chaos Dragon left hanging by a thread with 4 health.
My team finished this battle without taking any casualties, in fact, almost taking no damage.
