When the ground shakes, so does the soul
The double #earthquake of June 24th in Venezuela left many of us with our hearts in our throats. I experienced it at home, with my brother, and I still feel my body reminding me of that moment every time there's an aftershock.
What we experienced at home
It all started suddenly. We felt the house shake with a terrifying force, and although we tried to get out, the door frame blocked our exit. So we did the only sensible thing at that moment: move away from the windows, find a safer corner, and wait for the shaking to subside.
The hardest part was that it lasted so long. When it finally seemed to calm down a bit, we ran for the stairs to get to the street, and there we encountered a cloud of dust that prevented us from seeing clearly or understanding what had happened. In that instant, we knew that something serious had occurred nearby.
The Neighbor's House
The neighbor's house, which is also a multi-story apartment building, collapsed almost completely. Seeing that so close left us speechless, because our house was also damaged: objects and shelves fell, glasses and windows shattered, and a water pipe was damaged.
But honestly, none of that compares to the loss of our neighbor. It was a huge blessing that his whole family was outside, spending time in the front yard, because if they had been inside, the story would have been much more tragic.
What Remains After
Since then, we've spent several days collecting things, tidying up what we can, and trying to repair the house a little. Our neighbor, meanwhile, continues digging through the rubble to recover what he can: his belongings, his food, his household items, everything the collapse buried.
And although we try to carry on, the fear remains. With each aftershock, our hearts leap again, and for a second, we feel like we have to run for our lives once more. That shadow of trauma doesn't fade easily, but it also reminds us that we're still here, and that's already a lot.
Between Fear and Gratitude
If this episode leaves me with anything, it's a strange mix of fear, relief, and gratitude. Fear for what happened, relief that we're still alive, and gratitude that, all things considered, we didn't suffer a tragedy worse than that of so many families in the country.
Now it's time to do what needs to be done: repair, pick up the pieces, and move on. Sometimes there's no other option but to hold your head high, help however you can, and keep going, like so many of my fellow countrymen.
