Although rabies is considered a rare disease in developed countries, in other parts of the world it's a very real danger. I remember cases where even bats that nibbled on cattle's ears became vectors of the disease, and it became a serious problem. I believe I've also read of cases of rats as vectors elsewhere, and with their proliferation, they became a very serious danger.
