Es domingo, he tenido varias interrupciones eléctricas en el servicio, la señal de Internet me ha estado trabajando con dificultad, en fin, que es una situación ‘normal’ en mi #Venezuela actual, estoy corriendo para tratar de escribir y publicar antes de que la realidad me golpee de nuevo y vuelva a quedarme sin servicios funcionando. Pero, tratando siempre de tomarlo con el mejor humor que pueda, porque toca aplicar el viejo refrán de ‘reír para no llorar’.

En mi registro del día, en cuando a las actividades, he de decir que mis domingos suelen ser tranquilos, y este día ha sido muy calmo, eso me gusta, si no fuera por las fallas en los servicios, diría que ha sido un día muy agradable. Entrando en mi acostumbrada reseña de las efemérides de la #Historia para complementar mi registro del día, tenemos hoy una que me llamó la atención, además de que me despertó cierta sensación de ironía al pensar en los avances del mundo en cuanto a tecnología de comunicación e información, en contraste con la degradación continua de la infraestructura de servicios de la cual yo dependo para vivir.
Hoy es el Día de Wikipedia, se celebra en este 15 de enero, que en este día se puso en línea el sitio de la famosa Enciclopedia Libre, que se proponía brindar su contenido a todos los internautas. El día en sí, conmemora que el 15 de enero del 2001, luego de haber estado unos pocos días funcionando en conjunto con la plataforma de Nupedia, se oficializó el sitio web de #Wikipedia y desde entonces esta #enciclopedia no ha dejado de crecer, tanto en variedad de contenidos, como en su variedad de traducciones a distintos idiomas.
Por cierto, hablando del antecedente llamado Nupedia, hace poco menos de seis días que publiqué sobre esa plataforma web, si buscas un poco en mi blog encontrarás rápido el artículo.

I confess that in the beginning, as a teacher, I was a little reluctant to use electronic sources not endorsed by accredited sources. The idea that the contents of the online encyclopedia could be modified by users who did not really have the training to serve as a reference, worried me a lot.
Over time, I myself found myself reviewing the articles published on the encyclopedia platform and noticing how the user discussions allowed us to guide and correct things that initially needed to be improved. That changed my point of view and I began to recommend it as a general reference site, to get an idea of a subject or a work, but always recommending that you look at the end of each article for the references and links that they provided so that the subject will be addressed in greater depth.

A lo largo de los años, las celebraciones para esta fecha han sido diversos, así como su aceptación por parte de campos un poco tradicionalistas. Yo confieso que en inicio, como profesor, yo fui un poco reacio al uso de fuentes electrónicas no respaldadas por fuentes acreditadas. La idea de que los contenidos de la enciclopedia en línea podía ser modificado por usuarios que no tuvieran en realidad la formación como para servir de referencia, me preocupaba bastante.
Con el paso del tiempo, yo mismo me encontré revisando los artículos publicados en la plataforma de la enciclopedia y notando como las discusiones de los usuarios permitía orientar y corregir cosas que en principio era necesario mejorar. Eso cambió mi punto de vista y comencé a recomendarla como un sitio de consulta general, para tener una idea de un tema o de una obra, pero siempre recomendando que se buscara al final de cada artículo las referencia y los enlaces que brindaban para que el tema se abordara con mayor profundidad.
Con el paso del tiempo, yo mismo me encontré revisando los artículos publicados en la plataforma de la enciclopedia y notando como las discusiones de los usuarios permitía orientar y corregir cosas que en principio era necesario mejorar. After all, a dictionary or encyclopedia is not a specialized text, but a presentation of summaries of knowledge from different areas. At least that's what I remember about encyclopedias since they became popular with the representative work of the Western Enlightenment, the 'Encyclopédie' directed by Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d'Alembert, as well as many others that pursued similar purposes, whether it be that of Oxford, Larousse, Britannica or any other encyclopedia.

Después de todo, un diccionario o una enciclopedia no es un texto especializado, sino una presentación de resúmenes de conocimiento de distintas áreas. Al menos es eso lo que recuerdo de las enciclopedias desde que se popularizaron con la obra representativa de la Ilustración Occidental, la ’Encyclopédie’ dirigida por Denis Diderot y Jean le Rond d'Alembert, así como muchas otras que persiguieron fines similares, ya sea la de Oxford, Larousse, Británica o cualquier otra enciclopedia.
