Welcome to another episode that is very deep and it requires wisdom to respond accurately.

Are exams a measure of intelligence?

Well, I wouldn't say yes, because intelligence is very deep and we can't use exams to measure intelligence alone. A student or someone may have the intellect to do other things perfectly, like critical thinking, solving problems naturally, and having emotional intelligence, the ability to understand and put themselves under control even when things are not going well. A student may have the ability to read and memorize a note given and give it out during an examination and pass, but he doesn't, and he is not intelligent. Same thing here, a student can write exams and not pass as demanded by the organization or institution, but that doesn't mean they don't know anything. There are other areas in which he can express himself well, such as being creative in other areas.
So we can't use exams to measure people's intelligence.

Are exams just a test of memory?

I can't say exams are just a test of memory because in schools, some subjects that can't be memorized like mathematics which involves solving equations and giving an answer or solution to the problem, so in this case, you can't memorize mathematics, while the English language needs to apply the rules of grammar in correct grammatical structure, and literature in English has to do with interpretation of a text, imaginary, written and oral.

I want to share my experience of being a student in the secondary school. I was a good student who attended classes, had complete notes, and I read as much as I could. I tell you that I performed well in my examination. What they taught me in the classroom by my teachers, I gave it to them exactly. I came out with flying colors, but I lack communication skills and problem-solving. I was battling with self-confidence in the aspect of not being able to express myself in public even before my colleagues in the class. While some of my classmates were able to express themselves publicly with boldness and confidence.

It was always hard for me to understand a difficult topic, and I take time to understand something easily, let me say, I'm a slow learner. Not everybody can learn and understand easily and use their knowledge effectively.

Why is an application different from an examination?

Application of knowledge is being able to express or use what you have learned in a way that can bless others or be beneficial to society. People see that I studied linguistics and I'm able to speak good grammar and also coordinate people speaking the right words when necessary. Some people can speak good English but lack the choice of words that will edify but break people's lives. In other words, I can score 80% in Grammatically structure but I do not know how to structure myself when it comes to speaking.

Therefore, passing exams and having a good grade is good, but it will be much better if we can apply it in our daily lives and help others as well.
