You have to try finding things that make you happy, Mr Ki. Like games, books or spending time with your family, at least it will help keep you occupied and dilute the loneliness.
Ki smiled sadly. Doctor, i don't think you read my report carefully because if you did, you will see that the only family that matters to me are my children and wife but they are far away from me.
Far away? Your report says they live just 5 miles away, i won't call that far, at least for an adult. Doctor Rob intoned.
Doc., those 5 miles have a hundred mile long chasm between them and am too fluffy right now to sail over it otherwise i may get blown away, far away from them and all will be lost to me forever. Mr Ki replied. He slowly but deliberately took out his cigarette pack, fetched one out of it and stuck it in between his lips.
Mind if i smoke here? He asked. The Doctor was watching him with a keen interest.
Not really, Mr Ki. Please yourself the Doctor replied, waving him on.
He took out his lighter and fixed the slim yellow flame to the tip of the cigarette and when it ignited, he pulled long at it and drew a mass of smoke into his lungs before puffing it out with his mouth into the top of the spacious office with his head tilted back a little and held at an angle where he could still have his eyes on the Doctor.
After watching him for a few more minutes, Doctor Rob moved forward a little and said almost in a whisper.
Will you be kind enough now to tell me what created such a gap between you and your family? Doctor Rob asked.
Mr Ki took a few more pull then he squeezed the lighted end of the cigarette stick over the pack and dropped it on the table, then cleared his throat and began.
Years ago, Ki started, I worked for an organization that specializes in selling weapons, illegally in the dark market. We get them from corrupt heads of military and police and sell them to the highest bidder.
He stood up and walked to the refrigerator, took out a bottle of cold water, then he reached for the shelf nearby, took a glass and returned to the table.
We don't care what the buyers use it for, as long as they are willing to pay and our suppliers are ready to deliver, we damned the consequences, Ki pressed on.
You don't look like one who can do a sale bargain to me, Doctor Rob said. So what was your position in this organization, he asked?
I was their mop up man, he replied.
Mop up man? Doctor Rob asked looking surprised. Like you mop up the office rooms or what?
Mr Ki gave a little laugh and smiled at the Doctor. Then fixing his eyes directly to that of the Doctor, he slowly said, I take out their competitors and any supplier that gets a living conscience and wishes to do what is lawful, I show him the door out of this world! Ki said.
Oh! The doctor exclaimed softly, now i can see what you mop up.
Ki took the bottle of water, still looking at the doctor, he turned the cap and the seal broke with a low sounding snap, then turning the bottle over the glass poured himself a half full measure then he set the bottle back on the table and taking up the glass, he raised it up to his lips and drained it of every last drop!
So, what went wrong? Doctor Rob asked.
Ki gently placed the empty glass on the table, cleared his throat then continued.
I barely had time with my family, not that am always busy clearing our business runway but most times the other organizations do send their own mop up men and i had to stay away from my family most of the time to avoid leading any trailer up to them. Ki replied. I was almost just a kind of a dream crasher for my two kids because they only see me at night and even then, they were more asleep than awake. His toned had a lace of sadness in it.
I got fed up and told my employers i want to back out, that i have had a fair share of the clean up and want to quit. Ki pressed on. They were pissed off and said i knew too much to just be left roaming the country with every security agency in the country trying to sniff them out like hounds.
So, what happened and how did you get "Your" organization, sorry your Ex-Organization off your back? Doctor Rob asked.
Well, I did what i had to do, risked the much I could and luckily, i brought them down! Ki replied.
Now, why are you scared joining up with your wife and 2 kids? The doctor asked.
I took down my Ex-employers doc., because i knew who they are but i had made enemies among the other competitors while working for them and those, i don't know, Ki answered. So, i have to keep away from my family as long as i can see, if i want them safe. In trying to gather up for a comfortable living doc., i lost everything. Am a ghost to my wife and kids now, am invincible to the visible world! Ki pressed on.
Wow! Yours is a heck of a story Ki, doctor Rob sighed.
