Cell phone and wireless safety.
Could the cell phone industry be following a similar path to tobacco? What once was thought safe, transitioned to being obviously hazardous? Even at one point doctors recommended cigarettes. Cell phones having been around for a mere 35 years and appropriate studies begun only recently. Maybe its time we put the economic gain and pleasures of this technology on hold and refocus our efforts towards what we know is 100% safe.
Here's a quick history of mobile phones / radios. 1918, about 100 years ago, German military trains testing wireless telephony. 1924, public trains between Berlin and Hambur have mobile connection. Then mobile phones / radios were installed in vehicles. Jump to 1983 and the first mobile phones go on sale in the U.S for about $4,000 each, and weighed a bit more than 1 litre of milk! In 1985, about 340,000 cell phone subscribers in the U.S of the total 240 million population. 1987, 1 million subscribers. 1993, text messaging arrives. 1995, 13% of population subscribed to mobile phones, (33.8 million). Year 2000, 100 million subscribers, 38% of population. 2002 we have the first 'smartphone' and cameras come out around this time. 2005, 208 million subscribers, 69% of the U.S population. 2007, Apple's first Iphone. Today in 2018, an estimated 95% of Americans own cell phones! The population has now been saturated.
From the time the first mobile phone came out until the present in 2018 is only 35 years! Like with many other health issues it takes time for disease to show up in the body, especially cancer.
The standard test for cell phones measures the amount of radio frequency (RF) energy absorbed by the body, known as the Specific Absorption Rate or SAR, this measures the body tissues heating up. This is the only point this test measures, the only test we use for cell phone safety! Through independent testing we can see many more health issues that appear to arise before our body tissue is heated. Another cause for concern, the SAR test is done on a body model of a 220 pound adult. Independent tests are showing children and teens are much more susceptible to the effects of RF. Its noted the child's skull is thinner and softer so the RF exposure goes much deeper into the brain, more fluid in the brain and rapid physical development increases effects.
The largest independent report done on cell phones is summarized and labelled as the BioInitiative report. A report by 29 independent scientists and health experts from 10 countries covering the possible risks from wireless technologies. Tests are showing that even through minimal use at much lower than current safety levels, effects on our brains, damage to our DNA, genes, memory, learning, behaviour, sleep, neurological diseases like Alzheimer's, development of fetus and infants, children in school and much more.
Wireless is everywhere, to cut costs most business's, institutions and residential applications switch to wireless. The new smart meter is said to be the largest single source of RF radiation once fully implemented. This is installed on homes and used to measure electrical usage, thus saving to track the meter manually. Experts and public resistance has not stopped the meters from being installed despite reports of higher than advertised levels of RF or the issue of higher exposure if your meter is nearby your living room or sleeping quarters. The cordless phone that is tied into a land line, wireless baby monitors, wireless medical devices, surveillance systems and more, the wireless era is saturating our lives with little attention to the safety of it all.
Do we know enough to take action? There is more evidence than we need according to the 2007 BioInitiative Report, concluding that the existing public safety limits were inadequate to protect public health, and additionally it was agreed that new safety limits were needed 5 years prior to 2007. Every year new studies are being started and completed. Today in 2018 our RF exposure levels are higher, and thanks to the 2012 BioInitiative Report we understand that were much more sensitive to RF exposure than previously thought. But with cell phone users rising globally from 2 billion in 2006 to 6 billion in 2012, most cell phone users still remain unaware of the risks, even with an updated rating in 2011 as being 'possibly carcinogenic to humans'. This basically means there is sufficient evidence in testing with animals, but their is insufficient evidence with humans. International Agency for Research on Cancer, (IARC) Director Christopher Wild, "it is important that additional research be conducted into the long‐ term, heavy use of mobile phones. Pending the availability of such information, it is important to take pragmatic measures to reduce exposure such as hands‐free devices or texting. "
Conclusion. With cell phones having been available for only 35 years, it may be safe to say its hardly enough time to gain a full analysis of the technology, especially when so much is at stake. The industry standard to see if cell phones and other wireless technology is safe is based upon the ability for it to warm up body tissue. But testing is showing their can be harmful effects prior to tissue being heated. This should be very alarming and the experts who realize this are collaborating and sharing their findings, informing people as soon as possible, before industry on mass scale is able to adjust.
