Anyone travelling east from Žilina can see Strečno Castle, either by train or by car. The massive ruins above the Váh River are simply unmissable.
On the other hand, many people often overlook the Old Castle (Starý Hrad or Starhrad for short) on the other side of the river.
The first mention of the castle dates back to the 13th century. Back then it was called Varín, just like the settlement a few kilometres downstream of the Váh. It was originally a guard castle, built to defend the road in the Váh valley. However, after the construction of Strečno Castle, its importance began to decline and from the 16th century it gradually fell into disrepair.

The road to the castle is about four kilometres long and runs more or less on flat ground. The last few hundred metres are a steep climb to the ruins.
