Sabang Daguitan Surf Camp, located in Dulag, Leyte about an hour's drive from Tacloban City, is any beginner surfer's haven. Its all-black sand beach with not a single stone that could possibly harm your precious skin makes Sabang Daguitan the best spot to learn surfing.
My dear friend, Maerose works in Tacloban for a few years now; I've seen her photos and even videoes surfing here. I'm envious of seeing all those; anyone from Cebu would be envious. Being surrounded by other islands, Cebu's missing the possibility of catching a series of waves from open seas such as the Pacific Ocean in the East and the South China Sea in the Northwest. This is the reason one couldn't find surfing spots in Cebu except when there's a strong typhoon. But yes, who would want to surf when there is a typhoon? It could be deadly! If you want to really learn surfing or even try it at least once, you have to travel either to Siargao or La Union. But unknown to many, here's Dulag in Leyte, which in my opinion, is the nearest and cheapest one to visit from Cebu.
During another work adventure in Tacloban, I scheduled the trip on a holiday to spend a day with Maerose before I go back to Cebu. I was devastated at that time; I just experienced the greatest pain a man could ever inflict and as you might have guessed, I traveled to recover from the breakup. My friend being the supportive and loving type, offered her company to me that day. We were supposed to be picked up by her boyfriend (now, they're not together anymore!) but he got tied up with things at work. So we took the public transportation which was easy and relatively comfortable that the jeepneys in Cebu.
We only did a day tour together with Maerose's brother and the girlfriend of her brother.
But only Maerose and I were up for an adventure with the big waves in Dulag. It was my first time in Dulag and I was shocked to confirm that it's a decent spot to surf indeed! We had the longest hour of our lives, surfing with our guides who made sure we were given enough inland tutorials and demos and ensured our safety while in the actual surfing activity, too. I remember it very well; we were done surfing and we were just about to reach the shore and head back to the main campsite when it started raining. The sun was setting subtly in the East and here's rain out of nowhere. Instead of complaining, we were even happy to welcome the rain and all the emotions that come with it. Rain has been a significant symbol in my past relationship (although unofficial); so when it poured that afternoon while we're still on the beach, it comforted me. It told me all might not be well that day but one day, things will change for the better. And it did; four years later, my heart's fully healed and my life has never been so wonderful. Thanks to a friend and the rain, I made it out alive.
