Conventional wisdom says that's true, and logically it should be. But we're talking about China.
Honestly (and I confess I can't put my finger on very many specific examples of this other than a "general feeling" I got during the years I lived there), I feel like China's leaders may actually WANT an economic crisis, and I have hinted before at a suspicion that they are deliberately isolating themselves first before creating it (article here) because they want the Chinese population to blame the West for it, to feel abandoned and hated by the West, and to feel like "only the Party can avenge these wrongs and save us from the eeeeeeeevil West."

Historically, Chinese dynasties have had two responses to a crisis: become the object of blame and fall, or deflect the blame to foreigners and gain an even stronger grip on domestic power. I have a sneaking suspicion that the CCP is aware an economic crisis is coming so they want to time it to give them the best chances of having the second outcome instead of the first. Paul Midler ends one of his books with the same assertion. I realize the analysis of one China-watcher and one former China-expat is not exactly a "preponderance of evidence" and I won't deny I've gotten China wrong before, but I've also gotten them right at times when the "experts" didn't.
In any case, that's my theory.
