Tiquina Strait
Diary of my trip through Bolivia.
This diary comes a little out of order, I am not narrating it chronologically. But rather as the sensations arise. That is why today I would like to talk about the Tiquina Strait.
After several days in the city of La Paz, Bolivia, it was time to begin the trip to Lake Titicaca. To do this you must first arrive at the city of Copacabana, on the banks of the Titicaca.
We took a bus in La Paz and as we drove away, we saw how the city was left behind.

Estrecho de Tiquina
Diario de mi viaje por Bolivia.
Este diario viene un poco desordenado, no lo estoy narrando cronológicamente. Sino más bien a medida que me van surgiendo las sensaciones. Por eso hoy quisiera hablar del estrecho de Tiquina.
Luego de varios días en la ciudad de La Paz, Bolivia, ya era hora de emprender el viaje hacia el Lago Titicaca. Para ello hay que llegar primero a la ciudad de Copacabana, a orillas del Titicaca.
Tomamos un autobús en La Paz y a medida que nos alejábamos, veíamos como quedaba atrás la ciudad.

Gradually the views changed, and we went from seeing houses to seeing fields and people working in it. The photos are not very good because I took them with the bus moving, but the excitement was so great that I couldn't stop capturing those images.

Paulatinamente las vistas iban cambiando, y pasamos de ver casas a ver campo y gente trabajando en él. Las fotos no son muy buenas porque las tomé con el autobús en movimiento, pero era tanta la emoción que no podía dejar de capturar esas imágenes.

Meanwhile we saw how little by little the geography is changing.

Mientras tanto veíamos como poco a poco va cambiando la geografía.

And finally there in the distance we see Lake Titicaca!!! How much anxiety arriving generated in me!

Y por fin allá a lo lejos vemos el Lago Titicaca!!! Cuanta ansiedad me generaba llegar!

After traveling just over 100 km for just over 2 hours, we arrived at San Pedro de Tiquina.

Luego de recorrer algo más de 100 km durante algo más de 2 horas, llegamos a San Pedro de Tiquina.

San Pedro de Tiquina is a charming and picturesque town, where the Tiquina Strait is located. This strait divides the water of Lake Titicaca, and you have to cross it and then continue your journey to the city of Copacabana.
The strait is crossed by boat, there is no bridge connecting one shore to the other. It is said that there is a project to build a bridge, but for now it does not exist. So to cross the strait, we had to get off the bus to take a raft to take us to the other shore. We passengers go on a raft and the empty bus goes on another boat.

San Pedro de Tiquina es un pueblo encantador y pintoresco, allí se encuentra el estrecho de Tiquina. Este estrecho divide el agua del lago Titicaca, y hay que atravesarlo para luego seguir viaje hasta la ciudad de Copacabana.
El estrecho se atraviesa en barca, no hay puente que conecte una orilla con la otra. Se dice que hay un proyecto de construcción de un puente, pero por ahora no existe. De modo que para cruzar el estrecho, tuvimos que bajar del autobús para tomar una balsa que nos lleve a la otra orilla. Los pasajeros vamos en una balsa y el autobús vacío va en otra embarcación.

The most spectacular thing was seeing how they loaded our bus onto a kind of floating platform to cross the lake. Our bus was not the only one, there were several more crossing the lake. It is a very busy place, with many people and several boats.

Lo más espectacular fue ver como subían a nuestro autobús a una especie de plataforma flotante para atravesar el lago. Nuestro autobús no era el único, había varios más cruzando el lago. Se trata de un lugar muy concurrido, con mucha gente y varias barcas.

We bus passengers traveled in the boats, accompanied by the local birds that swam happily in the lake. The landscape was wonderful, meanwhile we left the other shore behind.

Los pasajeros de los autobuses viajábamos en las barcas, acompañados por las aves del lugar que nadaban alegremente en el lago. El paisaje era maravilloso, mientras tanto dejábamos atrás la otra orilla.

Already on the other shore, the water was so transparent that it showed the bottom of the lake.

Ya en la otra orilla, el agua era tan trasparente que dejaba ver el fondo del lago.

There we find this statue that represents Manco Capac welcoming the newcomers.

Allí nos encontramos con esta estatua que representa a Manco Capac dando la bienvenida a los recién llegados.

As we walked through the town and mixed with the people we waited for our bus to arrive.

Mientras caminábamos por el pueblo y nos mezclábamos con la gente esperábamos que llegara nuestro autobús.

Finally the bus arrived, all the passengers gathered and settled on it. We resumed the trip by land and followed a road that bordered the lake. From my window I could see the Titicaca that I had just sailed.

Al fin llegó el autobús, todos los pasajeros nos reunimos y nos acomodamos en él. Retomamos el viaje por tierra y seguimos una carretera que bordeaba el lago. Desde mi ventana veía el Titicaca que recién había navegado.
