For this week's call I chose some stairs that I took at the National Mint of Bolivia. Today it is a museum visited by thousands of tourists. Among those tourists I was with my camera.
The museum centuries ago was the Royal Mint of Potosí, that is, the place where coins are manufactured and minted for Spain and America.
The stairs in my first photo are the ones that go up to the first floor, where the museum is located.
It suggests mystery to me. I think of the people who have traveled through it over the centuries.
Para la convocatoria de esta semana elegí unas escaleras que tomé en La Casa Nacional de Moneda de Bolivia. Hoy es un museo visitado por miles de turistas. Entre esos turistas estaba yo con mi cámara de fotos.
El museo siglos atrás era la Casa Real de Moneda de Potosí, es decir, el lugar donde se fabrican y acuñan monedas para España y América.
Las escaleras de mi primera foto son las que suben al primer piso, allí donde se encuentra el museo.
A mi me sugiere misterio. Pienso en las personas que la habrán transitado a lo largo de los siglos.

This is a detail of the mask. There are several versions explaining the meaning of the strange mask. It seems to be the god Bacchus, the god of wine, because of the bunches of grapes. The intention of that mask with that expression was to scare intruders:
Este es un detallle de la máscara. Hay varias versiones explicando el sentido de la extraña máscara. Parece ser el dios Baco, el dios del vino, por los racimos de uva. La intención de esa máscara con esa expresión era asustar a los intrusos:
Here we have another old staircase, to continue exploring the museum:

On the upper floor we find the silver rolling machines. How many workers will have spent their lives among these machines:
En el piso superior encontramos las Máquinas laminadoras de plata. Cuantos trabajadores habrán pasado sus vidas entre estas máquinas:
Here we find another staircase, but in this case it is to go down to the bowels of the building:
Aquí encontramos otra escalera, pero en este caso es para bajar a las entrañas de edificio:
And there we found what was the force that moved the gears of the silver rolling machines on the upper floor. They were these poor pack animals. They spent their entire lives locked up there until they fell exhausted, died, and were exchanged for others. It was not only Aboriginal workers who suffered from slave labour.
Y allí encontramos cual era la fuerza que movía los engranajes de las máquinas laminadoras de plata del piso superior. Eran estos pobres animales de carga. Pasaban toda su vida allí encerrados hasta que caían agotados, morían y los cambiaban por otros. No sólo los trabajadores aborígenes padecían del trabajo esclavo.

The museum is really worth visiting. But it is sad to think about the life of sacrifice and abuse that the workers, and also the animals, went through.
Realmente el museo vale la pena visitarlo. Pero da tristeza pensar la vida de sacrificio y de abuso que pasaron los trabajadores, y también los animales.
