A few years ago, I made a photographic visit to the former Caseros prison in Buenos Aires. The place, completely deserted, was striking to me. Despite being empty, it was still a prison. I went with a group of photographer friends, and we were all deeply impressed.
I remember that when we visited, the prison had already been abandoned for some time. The inmates had been transferred to another penitentiary. This facility is located right in the city center, and I imagine that in its origins, at the end of the 19th century, it wasn't surrounded by such a densely populated area. However, urban growth must have made it difficult to coexist with the surrounding area, and besides, the building had become too small to house an ever-increasing prison population.
At that time, I used an analog camera, that is, a film camera. Therefore, it was essential to take accurate light readings to obtain the correct exposure. My intention was to capture the atmosphere created by the few rays of light that managed to penetrate the building. This created spaces with a strong visual impact, reminiscent of a Baroque stage set.
The emptiness of the place was mysterious, unsettling, and at times, terrifying. I hope I've managed to convey something of that unique atmosphere through my photographs.

We also explored the cells, now empty, but still teeming with memories. Traces of the lives that had unfolded there lingered on their walls and in their corners: inscriptions, marks, and silent signs left by those who had inhabited the place. The absence of people couldn't erase the sense of presence emanating from those spaces. Each cell seemed to hold fragments of stories suspended in time.

As we walked through those endless corridors, I found something that particularly caught my attention. It was a sheet of paper taped to a wall. Upon reading it, I realized it was a shooting schedule or a work order used during filming. I immediately remembered that the Argentine series "Tumberos" had been filmed there some time before. I had thoroughly enjoyed that series, so it was a pleasant feeling to find that remnant of the production in the middle of such a historically significant place. I was surprised to think how the same space had housed such different realities: first, the daily life of a prison, and years later, the recreation of a fictional story inspired precisely by that prison world.

I took many photographs that day; this work is just a small visual summary of that experience. What's surprising is that, to this day, that building is still standing. At the time, it was said that, once the prisoners were transferred, the jail would be repurposed to house some public office and serve a new function. However, that never happened.
After 25 years, the building continues to deteriorate in the very heart of the city. The passage of time, neglect, and lack of maintenance have left their mark. Meanwhile, dirt accumulates, and the place becomes a haven for rats and other pests. It's a shame that a building so significant to the history of Buenos Aires remains in that state. Perhaps one day a way will be found to reclaim that space and give it new meaning.
That concludes my journey for today. I hope these images have managed to convey at least some of the feelings I experienced during that visit.
Until next time!
