The Ghost on the Road

Can I say that I have seen a ghost before? Even now, my memory of that near-encounter with a ghost remains vague. According to science, the concept of ghosts is questionable. Let the story begin…

On my way to Big Band, my car was in its highest gear. Suddenly, I instinctively pulled the handbrake while simultaneously pressing the foot brake.

The screeching sound of the brakes did little to ease my anxiety. All my attention was focused on preventing a collision with an elderly woman, but it seemed that all my efforts were in vain.

After what felt like a collision, the vehicle finally came to a halt. I immediately got out and looked around for the elderly woman.

I held my breath when I moved around the vehicle and saw no one.

After regaining my composure, I drove home to my family.

Bisola, my daughter, came to welcome me.

“Daddy, you are back! Welcome.”

“Yes, daughter. I hope you are feeling well,” I asked.

“Yes, I am!”

Soon, we were enjoying a lovely pizza dessert prepared by my beloved wife. Pizza was a once-in-a-blue-moon treat in our home. After dinner, I went to bed.

At around midnight, the alarm rang. I woke up to turn it off.

“Why would the alarm ring at midnight?” I wondered. “This is absurd.”

I also noticed that the windows were open. This surprised me because we rarely left them open, especially at that time of night.

I called my wife, wondering why she had left the windows open.

She remained unresponsive. I tried to wake her up, but she refused to respond.

For a while, I was frightened.

I looked at her face and saw the elderly woman I thought I had hit with my car charging towards me, her body stained with blood. I screamed so loudly that I did not realise I was dreaming.

Everyone, including Darasimi, my daughter, thought I was being attacked.

Lola asked, “What is wrong?”

“Darasimi, get a cup of water for your dad,” she said.

“Honey, take it easy. What happened?”

“Darasimi!” Lola screamed simultaneously as she requested the water.

I collected the water, but it tasted really strange.

It smelled like blood.

I looked up at the person who had given me the water. Fear tightened around my chest as I gripped my wife once more.

“Honey, what is wrong?” she asked.

I tried to determine whether I was finally awake or still dreaming.

I began to narrate my ordeal to my wife.

“Lola, ever since I returned from my journey to the university today, I have been having some strange feelings.

“Yesterday, I thought I had collided with an elderly woman, but when I got out to check, I found no one. Additionally, tonight, I had a dream that seemed so real. I saw you in my dream, but when I looked at you again, you had become the old woman.

“I was really scared.”

Lola comforted me. She truly cared about me.

All of a sudden, Darasimi, who had been eavesdropping, came in with the glass of water. Shewore a smile that shows that I was at my vulnerable 🫪 state.

We all went back to bed after praying.

I lay awake, thinking deeply. However, I could not recall doing anything wrong. I had always associated such dreams with wrongdoing in one's life.

In the morning, Darasimi came to me fully kitted out in her Halloween costume.

She looked genuinely frightening.

“Good morning, Papa,” she said.

As I opened my eyes, I became so scared that I almost fainted.

“Papa, it's me! This is Halloween month, and I am going to school in this outfit.”

“Holy moly!” I exclaimed. It was only then that I calmed down.

“Double nightmare! Take care, bye!” I said.

That morning, Halloween lanterns, also called jack-o'-lanterns, and beautiful yellow curtains that blended with black and white formed part of the new design Lola had created for our home.

They were pretty scary, yet beautiful.

“Do you love it? I hope they aren't too scary,” she asked.

“Scary, my foot!” I replied, bursting into laughter.

“I could make them even scarier, you know?” she said.

“Yes, I know, but I am fine with these. Don't stir up another nightmare!” I replied.

We both burst into laughter.

Before Darasimi arrived, we had gone to a Halloween party at Gabriel House, where we had a wonderful time.

I wore a simple Batman mask, while my wife dressed up as Wednesday Addams.

At night, we had a lovely Halloween dinner while watching Home Alone together. Usually, we went to bed much earlier, but on this special day, we stayed up much later than usual, laughing and smiling.

That Halloween month turned out to be one of the scariest Halloweens I had ever experienced.

Thanks for visiting.
