With a lot of pressure, with absolute commitment and with the football they know best, Diego Pablo Simeone's Atlético de Madrid made Guardiola's Manchester City suffer at the Wanda Metropolitano, which was, as it always is, a cauldron that seeks to breathe energy into its players on the pitch.
Con mucha presión, con absoluta entrega y con el futbol que mejor sabe practicar, el Atlético de Madrid de Diego Pablo Simeone, hizo sufrir al Manchester City de Guardiola en el Wanda Metropolitano que era, lo que es siempre, una caldera que busca insuflar energía a los suyos dentro del terreno de juego.
Manchester City had to defend the narrow lead they had gained at the Eitihad, Atleti's siege gave them no chance to play the football they are used to and, as a result, they were never comfortable on Madrid soil.

Backed by the Metropolitano, who usually press like an extra man, that player number 12, Simeone put together an offensive plan that kept Guardiola on tenterhooks; the speed of Renan Lodi to exploit on the counter-attack, the talent of Joao Félix for the offensive play and the hope that Antoine Griezmann, with his quality, would get a shot at Ederson's goal.

Guardiola and his Cityzens struggled on the green of the Metropolitano, unable to find the space to deploy the flood of talent that their players have accumulated. Simeone's side's tactical approach was totally different to the now famous 5-5-0, and in the second half they were able to wrest possession away from a City side who are used to defending with the ball at their feet.

The clearest chance for City came on the 29th minute, Mahrez did not hesitate to launch at a Kyle Walker who passed him behind, good service from the British full-back on the back line, it was Foden who was on the receiving end at the far post and he passed to Ilkay Gündogan who hit the post and in the second instance Felipe blocked a weak counter-attack from the German.
La más clara para el City, llegó al 29’ Mahrez no dudó en lanzar a un Kyle Walker que le pasó por la espalda, buen servicio del lateral británico sobre la línea de fondo, fue Foden el receptor al segundo palo y cedió a Ilkay Gündogan que sacudió el poste y en segunda instancia taparía Felipe un débil contrarremate del alemán.
After that chance for the English, it was all about coming up against a red and white wall that was also starting to show its weapons on the counter; at 56' a great opportunity for Simeone's team; Llorente played with Joao Félix and "el Menino" gave the ball to Griezmann whose unorthodox shot went just wide of Ederson's goal.
Tras aquella oportunidad para los ingleses, todo fue toparse con un muro rojiblanco que además empezaba a mostrar sus armas en la contra; al 56’ una gran oportunidad para los de Simeone; Llorente jugó con Joao Félix y “el Menino” cedió de primeras a un Griezmann cuyo poco ortodoxo remate se fue apenas largo del arco de Ederson.
City will have to pass through Madrid again in search of a place in the final.

A triple change by Simeone at 69' served to shake up his side's attack, with Rodrigo de Paul, Yannick Carrasco and Ángel Correa coming on for Griezmann, Koke and Lodi, and from then on it was all to suffer for Guardiola's side, who minutes earlier had to do without their maestro, as Kevin De Bruyne had to be substituted with discomfort to bring on Raheem Sterling.
Un triple cambio de Simeone al 69’ sirvió para agiatar los suyos de cara al ataque, saltaron Rodrigo de Paul, Yannick Carrasco y Ángel Correa en sustitución de Griezmann, Koke y Lodi a partir de ahí sería todo resisitr para los de Guardiola que minutos antes se quedaban sin su maestro de orquesta; pues Kevin De Bruyne hubo de ser sustituido con molestias para dar entrada a Raheem Sterling.
The volume of play that City could not generate in the last 20 minutes was generated by Atletico Madrid, who pushed the Manchester side into their own half and forced them into a task they are not used to: resisting without the ball. And Guardiola's side held out largely because of Madrid's lack of firepower. The colchoneros were suffocating their opponents, but eventually left them with enough of a pulse to hold on.
El volumen de juego que el City no puedo generar en los últimos 20 minutos sí lo generó el Atlético de Madrid que empujó a los de Manchester hacia su propio campo y los obligó a una tarea a la que no están acostumbrados, resistir sin balón. Y resistió el equipo de Guardiola en gran parte por la falta de pólvora del conjunto madrileño. Los colchoneros estaban asfixiando a su rival, pero terminaron por dejarles con el pulso suficiente para aguantar.
The final stretch of the match was shameful and unsporting, with Guardiola's side focused on the trickery of wasting playing time on the clock and Atlético de Madrid falling into despair, Felipe assaulted Foden out of nowhere and Simeone's players, gripped by impotence, got involved in a brawl in which they were the undisputed losers as they broke their good attacking momentum heading into the final minutes; with a player less and more focused on arguing and complaining, the red and whites were left on the sidelines and Guardiola ended up taking his team to the semi-final where they will face Real Madrid.
El tramo final del partido fue vergonzoso y antideportivo, los de Guardiola centrados en la pillería de perder tiempo de juego en reloj y un Atlético de Madrid que cayó en la desesperación, Felipe agredió a Foden sin venir a cuento y los jugadores de Simeone, presas de la impotencia, se enzarzaron en una gresca en la que ellos serían perdedores indiscutibles al romper su buena inercia ofensiva de cara los minutos finales; con un jugador menos y más centrados en pelear y reclamar, los rojiblancos se han quedado en la raya y Guardiola terminó por llevar a los suyos a la Semifinal en la que habrá de enfrentar al Real Madrid.
