Many years ago, I threw caution to the wind and acted without worrying about the risk or consequences it may result in for any significant decision that won't take critical reasoning at all. The last one that stood as an eye-opener for me was my experience with a capitalist company, if I must say.
“Some people will say throwing caution to the wind is a decision of the heart and not the head, if yes and if no, who cares at this conscious state?” I told Chidinma to clarify her mind, but I have already made up my mind.
“But I don't understand everything you are saying, ohh, can you please go straight to the point?” she said, looking dead serious as ever.
“It is not hyperbolic saying that capitalism is still very well practice in the world even though it is barbaric, everyone opportuned are opportunist and careless for people working for them, they will put them in a state of need and manipulate them to make them stay under their umbrella of control”, I stated.
“Oye, you know that I am not a learned person like that, Oga(Boss), maybe you go break am down a little bit,” she replied, smiling and winking.
"Who is now learned?” I replied and continued.
“Friend, I am quitting this job”, I told her blatantly and she just kept looking at me in a confused state as she opened her mouth in agape and disbelief.
“I know that you are a good friend and also the one who collects information to detail it to them, so for me telling you is intentional,” I concluded.
At first, she wanted to deny the fact that she stood as an informant but at this point, she knew it was not a joke or she would be fooling herself.
"Are you serious or just teasing me?" was what came out of her mouth, and she continued, “Oye, have you seen another job, or have you been employed in a World Bank or oil company? “ she said jokingly.
“I have been living life before any job, and I will continue to live after it, so it is not a big deal unless you want to make it one,” I replied to her firmly and wished her good luck, and left.
“They used to say that sleeping at night and waking up the next day evolves risk, maybe or maybe not, so I don't know what’s next, and I think that is what stands for that mindset of risk taking.” I ruminated as I was on my way home.
Getting home was fast as Chidinma just lived a few streets away and as I walked in and stormed on the bed, a beep sound alerted my phone and I looked through to check what was on it and it messaged “you should have just protect what you have at hand” by Chidinma.
I looked at the message, knowing that she is now speaking indirectly for the organization, so I replied to her.
“How can you grow if you can't take a leap of faith on whatever you are doing? I appreciate your concern, but do not forget the outcome of my decision will be faced squarely by me, whether it is good or bad,” and I continued to work for my replacement to be placed.
After two months, I picked up a copy of the resignation letter and went to drop it officially, knowing that withdrawing from such a job means starting something new, or continuing from where I stopped, following a passion, or starting my own business.
I learnt lately that being sincere to the capitalist organization is a no, as they hold the last payment, believing that not being willing to sacrifice the loss will make me stay. So I stood by the opinion that work should not be about the payment only, but also the rest of the mind and comfort.
Then, if the CEO comes around and a meeting is held, a complaint like “you are too comfortable” will be laid down, and he emphasizes as if the worker's life depends on his work, and he is doing us a favor we can never repay.
His favorite quote is that “ you can't be too comfortable at work,” and sincerely, I bought that and comfort is the peak of achievement, in which the feeling will come when it is time.
This happened so many years ago and so much significance of throwing caution to the wind has shown up but what I am always grateful for is appreciating all for the good outcome which I consider as walking towards luck and the bad ones which is a lesson learnt for moving on to be at present state and time.
