It is what it is.
Remembering Pappy’s story and tale in modern-day significance pushes me to ask if anger is to be repressed or expressed when felt.
The last interaction I had with him on anger and anger issues showed more and less indifference, I should say.
‘It is noted that anger destroys things and a man who saw anger and displayed anger is a weakling but a man who saw anger and swallowed it is a strong man ‘, Pappy says as usual using Proverbs or native sayings in his speech as illustration whenever he talks.
So I asked, ‘Are you telling me, Pappy, that you never displayed anger and swallow it all the time in your life? ‘ I inquired.
He smiled and said,’ My child, you will know better as evolving with humans is considered and as you meet different people and go different places, your discernment and discretion will guide you he noted and continued,
The way people will intentionally poke you with a pin and ask you if it hurts is so rampant in human evolution, he concluded.
So, Pappy, what experience do you think must have triggered you to act out of character and display anger I asked jokingly.
Yes, I have many of them, why not, he said; though I am not an aggressive person when such things happen, ‘it is what it is.’
Truly, Pappy is one of the most composed people I have known, the worst he does is speak angrily to us when we cross the line repeatedly, and he has never for once raised his hand on Mother while we grow and when matters arise around him with others, he either walk away or settle it so I was very eager to hear his story and listening with hundred percent concentration.
He started, ‘This incident happened in early 2000 in Lagos Surulere in particular, I can remember, I was coming back from work on this day with a colleague and we waited for transit and couldn't find one due to God knows why, we decided to Walk to the next bus stop maybe our lucky will hold.
It is now getting to 5 o'clock pm, and I was fasting on that day, so I bought steamed bean pudding covered in leaves from a roadside woman who sells it so by the time I get home around 7 o'clock pm, I will just eat it with anything as my appetite bids for it, and she bagged it in a nylon bag for me.
Getting to the next bus stop, we were lucky as our lucky hold truly and a bus packed beside us and we ran as usual to have a sit and as I entered the bus, the bus conductor pushed me back immediately and I staggered almost falling down but immediately I recover my balance, I don't know when I fling the nylon I am holding to him and it burst scattered on his face as the bus moved on.
People around me laughed and laughed; even my colleague who witnessed the incident named me ‘the accuracy’, and after five minutes of calming down, I actually remembered I was fasting and had wasted my steamed beans pudding, which I was salivating on.
I don't know what might have caused the bus conductor to react in such ways instead of just telling me that the bus was not for the catch, but my reaction put me to check and the mess I made already,’ Pappy concluded that maybe it was the fact that he was young then made it so and after that bus left, another one came which get him and his colleague to their destination.
This time, I couldn't stop laughing either, because I couldn't believe with all his composure, a bus conductor would get the better of him.
So I concluded by reckoning on anger's significance. However, I know it is destructive and must not be employed in a behavioral pattern.
‘Is expressing anger a way to feel relief, or is age significant too, serves as a thing we put in recognition in anger ?’
I asked and would appreciate your opinion.
Thanks for reading through my blog. Have a great week.
