It is said that before a wall can crumble down, it must have cracks all over it, or an earthquake that gives no signal shows up all of a sudden.
I used to say that it would be hard for Davinson's walls to crumble because of their height and intensity, but without cracks, it fell, and I tapped out.
Davinson is a friend of mine who later became like a brother. I watched him batter heartbreak back-to-back, and I thought he would be the next Thanos in this Avengers movie and the reality of his.
Although he was my best man on my wedding day, I keep wondering how stoic he was that all the bridesmaids and other people at my wedding wondered if he was a robot.
“ This particular one's face is strong oo,” I heard a group of people murmuring at one extreme corner of the hall.
I smirked and looked at them, "Humans will always be humans,” I reckon, knowing they are quick to judge, and I looked at Davinson, who composed himself completely as if nothing had happened.
No one knew that the marriage was supposed to be a double wedding where I was to marry Lydia and he was to marry Angela on the same day, but the unexpected happened, and Angela called off the wedding and left Davinson no other choice but to be my best man.
I knew he was broken and pleaded that he shouldn't, but his decision also shook me to the core. Davinson was a poet, and that was Angela's complaint.
I can not forget the last dinner we had together, where we wanted to finalize the wedding plan. The two couples sat at one table in Davidson’s apartment.
“ I can't do this with you,” we all heard after announcing our plans. At first, I thought Angela did not want a double wedding, but the second statement shook me to the bone.
“ We are not compatible; our lifestyles are different,” she said in a quiet but firm tone.
Although Angela is a model and a fly girl, it doesn't make a difference.
“ I am also a model too, and Teddy is a work-from-home man,” Lydia said, referring to me by trying to convince her.
“ I have made up my mind,” she replied, nodding her head in disagreement, and a long silence erupted.
“ So what are you still doing here?” Davinson uttered slowly but angrily, and that was the end. Angela walked out, and that was the last time I saw her.
After my wedding, Davinson raised his walls to the highest height, and during the weekend gathering where we met, having a few cups of beer with other friends, he said, “Ladies are just like NEPA; their electric lights fluctuate a lot.”
We all burst into laughter, knowing that he was referring to the inconsistency and lack of commitment of the ones he met.
“ But three of us are married,” Kunle, a friend, replied, pointing to me and Haruna.
“ Three out of six,” James, another friend, replied, and we laughed it off before going our separate ways.
Months later, I knew something had changed about Davinson; as before, he really didn't come outside and always stayed indoors during the gymming section and would overwork himself, saying that he was working on his anthology. He has also lost his spark and interest in romance, which was his best, and he will always talk about Angela on any given occasion, illustrating that he hasn't let go, but today was different.
“ What's up, bra?”I heard from a distance, and Davinson walked up to me.
“ You didn't tell me you were coming to work out today,” I said in amazement after a friendly hug.
It was obvious that Davinson's heart was light, and I was so happy that it had been a long time seeing him in such a good mood.
“ Niggar, I got to keep fit,” he replied, and I was like, “Oh, that is great to hear, friend!”
“ This is Davinson that I love to see; it is good to see you laughing wholeheartedly instead of your former laughter that displayed your teeth like a snake’s bare fangs,” I said jokingly.
“ Men, I won't lie to you, I tapped out, and I think I am giving love a chance again ”, he said with this glow of genuineness.
“ I owe you one for the good news,
Maybe a cup of beer,” I said, laughing uncontrollably, and continued after giving him a soft punch on his shoulder.
“ My guy, gist me na..”.I said after the first lap of jogging.
"Bra, it was at the garden retreat; I went there to meditate as usual, na,
I was under that Neem tree, my favorite spot, and closed my eyes for a few minutes to catch my breath and to open them.
I saw a lady just standing opposite me.
Although I had never seen her before, the recognition was something I had no idea about…
Just like an earthquake, without warning or sign.
It seemed as if I had known her all my life,” he concluded with a grim ending to the press-up he was doing.
I smiled.
“ This was the feeling I felt meeting Lydia,” I ruminated.
“Congratulations, bra,” I replied.
He laughed and shrugged it off, and a few months later, Davinson became a Mister to whom is ready, as readiness dissolves the fear of building a home together without being afraid of its walls crumbling.
