La visita a los abuelos y su mundo ecológico y sustentable / Visiting grandparents and their ecological and sustainable world. Original Story / Cuento Original.
-A causa tuya Adrián. -
- ¿Recuerdas?.
-Si abuelo, me recuerdo bien.
-¡Coño abuelo me dejas loco! Dije, realmente sorprendido
Today after so much time locked up because of the pandemic, we can finally go to visit the grandparents, we have spent about an hour driving, I could not stop looking out the car window, it feels great to receive the sun's rays, breathe the fresh air and feel the breeze in the hair.
It is interesting, that the grandparents after having spent all their lives in the city have retired to the countryside, better said to the mountains since the grandparents bought a country house in the mountains of Vargas State, which now they changed the name to La Guaira.
I can not stop seeing the beautiful mosaic of colors that nature gives us, my soul rejoices like that of a child, I feel free for the first time in a long time, I did not understand, nor did I know that the confinement of the pandemic had affected me so much until I saw the wonderful state of mind in which I find myself here in nature.
When we arrived, grandma welcomed us with hugs, kisses and gave us coffee and catalinas. My grandmother, seeing me so enraptured with the landscape and all that it offered me, smiled and gave me the coffee in a cup instead of giving it to me in a cup, my old brother and I asked for grandfather, and grandmother told us, he's up there riding some pipes to carry water to the cochinera.
-What do you mean, "cochinera", said my old man? -
-Well, yes, son, your dad got into raising pigs when he was 70 years old. - He laughed and continued talking to us.
I asked grandma if I could go see grandpa, she said, "Sure son, go that way, once you get to the top, you will see your grandpa and his pigs on the right side. - He turned and continued talking to the family.
I got up and asked them if any of the people present wanted to come with me, and the answer was negative. Apparently none of them were enthusiastic about being in the countryside and from the tone of my parents' conversation they apparently didn't like the fact that the grandparents had left town.
I went out walking and followed grandma's directions and after about 20 minutes of walking, I saw my grandfather, bringing down food and putting it on some car wheels cut in half, and while he was putting the food, some little piggies surrounded him and jumped up to devour what grandpa was putting on them.
When I saw Grandpa, I saw a strong man full of life, I approached him and shouted. Grandfather.
-Hello, Grandfather, how are you?
-Very well Adrian, it's good to see you. - He said as he gave me a big hug.
-Help me place this food and water for the animals. -
-Of course, grandfather, with pleasure.
As we worked, we chatted and Grandpa told me about his plans.
That's when I asked him, "Grandfather, why two retired university professors, a sociologist and a journalist, who have lived in the city and on the university campus all their lives, decide to come to the countryside when they retire to raise pigs and do planting experiments?
-Because of you, Adrian. -
-How is it that I have anything to do with all this, Grandpa? -How is it that I have anything to do with all this, Grandpa? -
-Do you remember when you visited us at the house 2 or 3 years ago, when your grandmother and I had just retired from the university?
-Yes grandpa, I stayed with you for two weeks and you told me about your university adventures and your encounters and disagreements with the political positions of the rectors and the governments, you told me about your militancy in anarchism and how you and grandma met, and you also told me about many of your youthful follies. Of course I remember, I enjoyed it very much. -
- Well, at that time your grandmother and I were deciding what we were going to do with our lives, we were retiring, but we felt healthy, strong, full of life and with a lot to give, and when we reviewed our lives, we saw that our children were already married and with their lives made, with their ups and downs economically like everyone, but they were already independent and were making their own lives and their own stories. -
-I know, Grandpa. - I said looking at grandpa thinking he would be sad, but I was wrong.
-Then, when grandma and I were considering what to do with our future, you came and told us about the blessed video of the World Economic Forum people, do you remember, the one that says, you won't have money, you won't have possessions, you won't eat meat and a bunch of other stupid things and ends up saying that we will be happy. - Do you remember?
-Yes, grandfather, I remember well. And I remember that you and grandma started researching and grandma wanted to do an academic paper on that subject, if I remember correctly. - I said as we sat down in front of where the pigs gathered to eat.
-Well, to make the story Adrian, we read, we investigated and we realized that the powerful ones of always at political and economic level were doing theirs to dominate and control the society with the economy and technology. We realized through the readings, the conversations we had with university classmates, acquaintances from other universities in other countries that something big was coming.
We researched about cryptocurrencies and conspiracy theories and we think we knew what was in store for us in the future and we acted accordingly, I mean, our children were grown up, they had their life made, everyone has their house and family.
So grandma and I decided to start a new struggle and leave something else to our children and grandchildren, a small self-sustainable farm, so me with 67 and you grandma with 60 years old decided to start this new challenge and that's why we are here.
We sold the big apartment and the car, we kept the truck and the studio apartment, we bought these 10 hectares of land from a neighbor at a ridiculous price, with the small house you saw when you arrived, which has two bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen and living room and we came here and the rest of the money we put in Bitcoin.
-In Bitcoin, grandfather, really?
-Yes, as I told you, we did a lot of research on the subject and decided to invest the money there as a store of value. Besides, Bitcoin has a certain anarchist tendency that fascinates me.
-Grandpa, you're driving me crazy! I said, really surprised
And we started with what you call planting experiments, we divided our small land into sections, we started planting by hectares different types of crops, the idea was not to get rich but sustainable and self-sufficient.
And yet we have had some profit, with what we got from planting corn and carotas, we bought the chickens, now we produce eggs, your grandmother has an orchard near the house, we planted fruit trees and avocado trees, and we have two water wells on the property, and thanks to that we set up those tanks to produce Tilapias and we are already going to have the first fish production, there near the house we put the chicken coop, we make cheese with goat milk and over there on that side are the goats and we are putting the pigs here in the upper part.
And we are not far from the world, we have internet with that antenna, very expensive but we have it and we have those solar panels for electricity and now we are going to have the pigs.
- The pigs for the light, grandfather? -
-Yes Adrian, that's why we put it up here, if you see well, you will see that I put a part of polished cement and here there is a part with cheap ceramic that goes to that drain that I put, you see. -
-Yes, grandfather. -Yes, grandfather.
-There you can see the pipe that goes down and there is that tank, you see it. - I said yes, nodding my head.
- Roughly speaking the process is as follows, there in that tank, the feces of the pigs arrive, they are heated and produce gas, as you can see there are two pipes, one that goes to the turbine that produces the energy and the other that goes to the burner that heats the tank. With that and the solar panels, we have extra energy, but it is necessary if we do the other project. -
- What other project, Grandpa?
- I am thinking about a mini farm but not Bitcoin, I was thinking about Hetereum and Ziliqa. - My dear old anarchist grandfather said to me while laughing.
-Are you serious grandpa? -
- Of course, if we can be sustainable and productive we have everything we need and when we are no longer around, this way of life will remain for our future generations. Adrian, we must continue fighting and advancing in the struggle for a more humane and just society. And every sustainable mini-farm like this one, which helps many people to have proteins and feed themselves, is a kick in the ass to those who want to dominate the world like the clowns of the World Economic Forum.
-Grandpa I don't know what to say, really. -
-Let's go home now, it's time to eat. -It's time to eat. -
-Yes, let's. -
-Grandpa, how is grandma's leg pains and asthma?
-She takes and uses a herb that helps her a lot and I use it with her, so we are really healthy. And we work on the land, in the house and we even write one or another article, the same or better than before. -
By the way, there are the herbs I told you about, I am going to cut some to dry, it is used for ointments, tea, infusions and some people smoke it. - He told me as he went to cut the herbs in a special garden for them.
While he was cutting the herbs, a family of geese passed by him.
-Grandfather, what are those?
-They eat the bad weeds in this orchard and the weeds that grow near the fruit trees, and they constantly fertilize the soil. - Grandfather said as he laughed.
-Grandfather, that hidden orchard where the weeds are, they are not marijuana plants. -
-That's right Adrian, who told you that the struggle for an ecological and sustainable future has to be boring. By the way, you're already in college so maybe you can use it, if you stay for the weekend, we'll smoke some joints with grandma and on Monday I'll take you home. - He told me while he hugged me with his huge arm with affection and shook my hair.
AAnd as we walked home together, I realized that the grandparents were right and that we, the new generations, must prepare ourselves on all fronts for the new struggles to come.
