Introduction:

First of all cordial greetings to all the members of the CineTV community, for this contest I chose the movie, "The Mysterious Island" but the 1961 version, since countless versions or rehashes as we say in country have been made of this movie, but every time they make a new version, it moves further away from the version written in the book by Jules Verne.

In fact, the last version I saw of the Mysterious Island was the Hollywood remake with "The Rock Johnson" called "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island", which if it is true that it has some nuances that bring it closer to the book and the original movies, it is totally distorted, from what Verne's book is.

On the other hand, these Hollywood movies sacrifice much of the dialogue and the original context of the first films and the book itself, to give priority to special effects and stereotypes of American culture, thus breaking a beautiful narrative with which Jules Verne captivated the minds of entire generations.
Unfortunately, the above mentioned is a practice that is becoming more and more common in Hollywood and with which the opportunity to take the narrative of the original works, taking advantage of current technologies, which would be really wonderful, is lost. As long as it doesn't fall back into the stereotypical American hero vision and limited worldviews of many of today's Hollywood screenwriters.

The movie:

The Mysterious Island year 1961, for my taste is great and has interesting situations, besides that in it there are very deep dialogues, which touch the ethical and moral values of society, both in the book and in the film.

If it is true, the film makes an attempt to generate amazing special effects for the time in which it was made, it is also true that it has the limitations of the time in this area, however, I really enjoyed watching the scenes of the giant crab and the chicken, in fact the scene when they prepare it to eat after killing it is very interesting, I also remember very much the fight against the giant octopus and the one with the bee that encloses a young couple in a honeycomb, in that scene you can see the whole structure of the honeycomb and the individual blocks of it, I loved it.

Another important point of the film of the year 61, is that it begins in the prison camp of the Civil War, of the USA, then comes the escape in the balloon and the huge storm that makes the balloon drifts and advances at an enormous speed to unknown waters, falling sis crew members to the sea and arriving at the Mysterious Island.

Then there is the process in which two women arrive at the island as survivors of a shipwreck and get with the survivors of the balloon, which makes them start an adventure of survival together, in which they face animals of enormous size, receiving help from Captain Memo, without him being visited.

I also liked very much the surprise of the survivors, when Memo sinks a pirate ship that bombed the island, and goes to the beach with a diving suit, leaving the members of the group of survivors open-mouthed, on the beach.

If it is true that the film is from 1961, it is also true that great efforts were made to demonstrate the technological processes that Captain Memo possessed, such as the Nautilus, that mythical submarine that trapped Verne's readers for generations, the diving suits, the ray guns they used at the bottom of the sea, and all that, reflected in a film based on a book written in 1875.

Hence, the enormous importance, of respecting the narratives and contexts, since the new generations of viewers, have no idea what they are seeing in today's movies, let alone that they are based on a book from the late 1800's.

Best scenes:

For me there are several memorable scenes in the movie, but I will only list a few:

  • The fight with the giant crab and how they rescue the soldier, turning him over and placing him on his back.
  • The fight with the giant chicken.
  • The scene with the Giant bee and how they lock the young couple in the honeycomb.
  • The exit of Captain Memo with his Sea Diver suit.
  • The scene when the young people see the Nautilus for the first time.
  • When they refloat the sunken ship.
  • When the volcanoes explode and the island sinks with Memo on it.
Finally, the dialogues with Captain Memo, and between the protagonists, there are moments that make the viewer reflect on life, values and worldview.
It is a movie that I recommend to watch and enjoy.

Thank you for reading.
