When we say an essay, it is a continuous prose writing consisting of many paragraphs. A paragraph consists of one or more sentence constructed and arranged to develop a main point or idea. The structure of an essay. Introduction. The introductory paragraph is the first major part of an essay and it is similar to the topic sentence of the paragraph. It presents the main idea of the essay. It must tell the reader or the marker what the essay is about.(for example teenage pregnancy, rape, a journey made). The introduction should be one paragraph made up of three or four sentences. The best arrangement is as follows: - make a general comment about the topic. The general comment may be: *personal opinion about the topic. *A fact about the topic. *A figurative expression such as a proverb that is related to the topic. * A quotation that is connected to the topic. - Define or explain key word(s) ( if any) in the topic. - state what is referred to as statement of purpose. This is the sentence that clearly spells out what is to be discussed in the body of the essay.
