There is a splendid valley that was the cradle of one of the largest empires in the world. In the Peruvian Andes, the Sacred Valley of the Incas is a territory that extends along the Vilcanota-Urubamba River. The Incas saw in this course of water the terrestrial counterpart of the Milky Way.
The steepest rocky promontories of the valley are crowned with imposing ruins of fortified citadels. Very close to Cuzco, which was the capital of the empire, the towns of Pisac, Calca, Yucay, Urubamba and Ollantaytambo are located in the valley. Towards the top stand the Pitusiray, Sahuasiray, Verónica and Chicón mountains, with their peaks of perpetual snow.
